The 9 million people of Haiti, largely of Afrcan descent, inhabit about 10,000 square miles of the paradise-like Caribbean island of Hispaniola. They constitute the only nation to gain its independence through a successful slave rebellion in 1804. Sadly, Haiti remains the poorest country in the Americas.
Its independence was inspired in part by the secular idealism of the French Revolution and biblical Christianity, but launched in a voodoo ceremony on August 14, 1791, that, according to oral tradition, included sacrificing a pig, drinking its blood and making a pact with the demonic supernatural.
In 200 years, none of its 32 coups, multiple dictatorships and democratic elections succeeded in building political ...

The hours of mass media consumed by American children and teenagers just took another big jump upward.
A new study by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation shows that American children age 8-18 consume on average 75 and one-quarter hours of one or another form of mass media per week, an increase of more than 15 hours per week since 2004.
The study observed 2,002 school-age children from October 2008 until May 2009. It was supported by a more comprehensive study of 702 students who wrote media diaries.

Several churches in Phoenix, Ariz., San Francisco, Calif., and Lambeth, England are fighting new "noise abatement" orders from local city councils.
"The law is being used as a pretext to harass and silence Christian viewpoints not approved by the State," said Andrea Williams, director of The Christian Legal Centre in England.
"Churches shouldn't be punished for exercising their faith publicly," adds Alliance Defense Fund Senior Legal Counsel Erik Stanley. "The law is unconstitutionally vague and has been abused to silence a form of worship that has peacefully sounded through the streets of our nation since its founding."
Bishop Rick Painter of Christ the King Church in Phoenix was convicted and sentenced to a 10-day suspended jail se...
A Dutch lawmaker will be tried for a "hate crime" in the Netherlands for making a short documentary warning that Islam threatens Western Civilization.
Dutch Parliament member Geert Wilders previously was banned in Britain - a sentence later overturned in court - for making the movie FITNA (meaning "strife"), which features verses from the Koran, the phony religious text invented by Arabs and Persians, alongside images of terror attacks in 2001, 2004, and 2005 in the United States, Madrid, and London.
Leader of the Dutch Freedom Party, Wilders has been living under 24-hour protection by police for nearly six years, because Al-Qaeda has called for his murder.
Wilder calls the "hate crimes" prosecution an "attack on freedom of speech....
The Quebec government in Canada has moved to ban all expressions that homosexuality is immoral or unbiblical.
Kathleen Weil, Quebec's Minister of Justice and Attorney General, released the new policy last month, according to WorldNetDaily. Jean Charest, the Premier of Quebec, writes that the policy is intended to "move towards full acceptance of sexual diversity."
The new policy, among other things, would ban even statements merely saying that heterosexual relationships are the highest form of "sexual orientation."
In Leviticus 18:22 and 24-30, of course, God clearly calls homosexual behavior wicked or evil, and Jesus Christ agrees with that judgment in Mark 7:20-23.

The movie THE STONING OF SORAYA M., a true account of a young women in a remote Iranian village falsely executed for adultery, is reportedly stiffening the resolve of protestors, especially women, against the evil Islamic regime in Iran.
Writer Mark Tapson of Big Hollywood reports that the movie is being shown secretly in Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, and other cities in Iran.
If true, this is another example of how the mass media can affect our culture.

Contrary to a United Nations report from its global warming committee, the glaciers on the Himalayan Mountains will not melt totally by 2035, if ever.
The scientists behind a report two years ago from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the glaciers would be completely melted by 2035 have admitted the report was not true and not supported by any formal research.
The current rate of average glacier melting is less than one meter per year, according to Science Daily in 2009. Since the average glacier is 300 meters thick, according to Professor Julian Dowdeswell, director of the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University, it would take 300 years of constant global warming to melt them. Assuming, of course,...
The worldwide socialist group, Socialist International, which boasts as members and affiliates 170 political parties and organizations, including Britain's ruling Labour Party and South Africa's ruling ANC party, has the biggest clout at most United Nations global conferences.
So says reporter William F. Jasper of New American.
Jasper notes that the SI played a major role at the UN's global warming meeting in Copenhagen, which gave Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez a rousing welcome during one of his anti-capitalist, anti-American rants.
Though Copenhagen was a failure, SI is set to play a major role in the UN's Summer 2010 follow-up to Copenhagen in Mexico City. In fact, in 1992, the UN and SI established a joint commission in support...
The Barna Group reported recently that the decline in the number of mainline Protestant churches and members of mainline churches may be due, in large measure, to a lack of faith.
Only 49% of mainline adults describe themselves as "absolutely committed to Christianity." And, 72% say they are more likely to develop their own religious beliefs than to adopt those taught by their denomination or church.
Encourage everyone you meet to establish a committed, personal, biblical relationship with God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. A diligent study of the Holy Bible is a vital part of an accurate, profound theology as well as a rewarding life celebrating the true, the good, and the beautiful.
