Judge Calls Christian Parents Bigoted
December 15, 2009

A recent court case in California led a judge to call Christian parents who want to opt their children out of pro-homosexual indoctrination “bigots.” California law allows parents to opt their children out “health education,” which used to be a code name for sex education and pro-homosexual information. The parents say that a new pro-homosexual curriculum, now called an “anti-bullying” program, is still pro-homosexual, and they have the right to opt out. The judge, Frank Roesch, insinuated that the parents are bigots, however, and that there is no homosexual indoctrination possible, because people are simply born that way. The judge also somehow managed to declare “creationism” to be “false.” Perhaps Judge Roe...

Capitalism, Christianity and AVATAR
December 15, 2009

By David Outten, Production Editor A screenwriter can create any world he wants to and with computer graphics directors like James Cameron can bring it to life. Reality is something else. At a screening for AVATAR, I was given a book entitled AVATAR: An Activist's Survival Guide. The book begins with a quote: "There are many dangers on Pandora, and one of the subtlest is that you may come to love it too much." - Dr. Grace Augustine. Grace is the fictional character in the movie, who heads up the avatar program and wants to see mankind befriend the natives. Her comment is actually true but in a context not intended. The danger to moviegoers is that AVATAR presents the Na'vi culture on Pandora as morally superior to life on earth. If yo...

Make Your Movie Vote Count - See Family-Friendly, Christian Movies!
December 12, 2009

By Jeff Holder, with Tom Snyder and Ted Baehr It's awards season in Hollywood, which means that movies are vying for attention to get votes for Academy Awards and other influential honors. Even here at MOVIEGUIDE® we are furiously working on our own awards show, The 18th Annual MOVIEGUIDE® Faith & Values Awards Gala, set for Feb. 23, 2010 in Los Angeles. Studio publicists want their movies to win awards, so all over Hollywood there are full-page ads in the Industry trade paper VARIETY and billboards adorning Sunset Blvd. calling out names of movies. All of this is to get the vote of the people who hand out awards. But, the votes that count the most in Hollywood are those cast by the average moviegoer who plunks down $10 to $15 t...

The Effects of Pornography on Individuals, Marriage, Family, and Community
December 09, 2009

By Patrick F. Fagan, Ph.D. Executive Summary Pornography is a visual representation of sexuality which distorts an individual’s concept of the nature of conjugal relations. This, in turn, alters both sexual attitudes and behavior. It is a major threat to marriage, to family, to children and to individual happiness. In undermining marriage it is one of the factors in undermining social stability. Social scientists, clinical psychologists, and biologists have begun to clarify some of the social and psychological effects, and neurologists are beginning to delineate the biological mechanisms through which pornography produces its powerful negative effects. Key Findings on the Effects of Pornography The Family and Pornography ...

Behind the Scenes of THE BLIND SIDE: Standing Up for Christian Values
December 04, 2009

By Gail Nordskog and Jeff Holder The faith-filled movie hit of the season is THE BLIND SIDE starring Sandra Bullock as a woman who adopts a homeless high school African-American boy and gives him the chance of a lifetime to play college football. The best part about the story is that it is true! Though portrayed by Sandra Bullock, the real life woman who reached out to the young Michael Ohr is Leigh Anne Tuohy. Movieguide® had a chance to talk to Ms. Tuohy about the criticism she received for adopting Michael and how she was even accused of doing it just to help out Ole Miss. Movieguide®: There were a couple of scenes in this movie that I thought were kind of interesting. The conversation you had with your friends [when your friends di...

Was Ayn Rand Right?
December 04, 2009

By Jay W. Richards, Ph.D Editor's Note:  Hollywood is about to release Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED in 2011, and Ayn was once upon a time a screenwriter in Hollywood. Therefore, Christians should understand the strengths and weaknesses of her philosophy. To help clarify the Christian perspective toward Miss Rand, here is a wonderful article to read and pass on to your family and friends. If you're over 40, you probably remember the 1987 movie Wall Street. Kirk Douglas played the key role, a ruthless corporate raider named Gordon Gekko. Gekko is famous for his defense of selfishness: "Greed. . . is good," he tells a young broker. "Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. ...

Watering Down Religion
December 01, 2009

An organization calling itself The Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions recently appointed a Muslim cleric as its new chair. The kind of "pluralism" that this group (including its very name) represents is an obvious attempt to water down the real distinctions among the world's religions, and, hence, represents a watering down of the term religion itself. In that light, it is interesting to note that the Council's two biggest social reform efforts are destruction of "the excessive consumption that drives ruthless economic development" and focusing on "environmental issues and climate change." Of course, the definition of "excessive consumption" is in the eye of the beholder. And, the topic of "climate change" has promoted all...

Young Voters Influenced by Celebrity Endorsements
December 01, 2009

In another sign of cultural collapse, a new study by researchers at Washington State University shows that celebrity endorsements are an effective political strategy for engaging younger voters and getting them to the polls. The study found that an 11% increase in voter turnout among 18 to 24-year-olds in recent years was "largely attributable to celebrity get-out-the-vote promotions." Also, for example, the support of Oprah Winfrey helped Barack Obama win the presidency, and the support of actor Chuck Norris helped Mike Huckabee come in second to John McCain during the Republican primaries. This trend shows that MOVIEGUIDE®'S efforts to help Hollywood celebrities in their Christian walk, through the Annual Faith & Values Awards Gal...

More Sleaze from the Homosexual ‘Community’
November 25, 2009

The homosexual community is known for its sexual sleaze and pornography. Such was the case recently at the American Music Awards on Nov. 22 when openly homosexual pervert and American Idol "singer" Adam Lambert shoved the faces of dancers into his crotch, led others around on dog leashes, and passionately kissed his male keyboard "player" on the mouth. This perverted display goes all the way back to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible. As such, it proves the righteousness of God in condemning such evil in passages like Leviticus 18:1-30, Mark 7:20-23, Romans 1:24-32, and Revelation 21:8. Lambert's behavior, and the often crude, lewd, and obscene behavior of many leaders and artists in the homosexual "movement," shows that this m...

More Female Child Stars Linked to Sex Movies
November 24, 2009

More female child stars in Hollywood are being put into sexploitation movies. MOVIEGUIDE® has already protested Dakota Fanning's role in the child rape movie HOUNDDOG. Despite the dismal failure of that ridiculous, sick movie, Fanning will share top billing next year with Kristen Stewart, the ingénue of the TWILIGHT movies, in a movie titled THE RUNAWAYS, about a real "jailbait" rock band in the 1970s. Meanwhile, child star Abigail Breslin will appear in something called RAPE: A LOVE STORY, and AnnaSophia Robb (RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN) reportedly will appear in another "adult" movie like the one she did with Charlize Theron, SLEEPWALKING. Apparently, as shown by the Hollywood crowd that rushed to the defense of Roman Polanski recently, t...
