An Open Letter to Miley Cyrus
An Open Letter to Miley Cyrus
October 08, 2013

Irish Pop Singer to Miley:  Don’t ‘Prostitute’ Yourself Irish pop singer Sinead O’Connor wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus about Miley’s shameless, sexualized dancing at a recent awards show and her new video showing her completely naked on a large wrecking ball. O’Connor, 46, told the 20-year-old singer not to “prostitute” herself to the music industry. “I am extremely concerned for you,” she wrote, “that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your video. . . . You will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether it’s the music business or yourself doing the pimping. . ....

If It Walks Like a Hit and Talks Like a Hit. . . It’s Probably DUCK DYNASTY
If It Walks Like a Hit and Talks Like a Hit. . . It’s Probably DUCK DYNASTY
October 05, 2013

By Kent Woodyard, Contributing Writer Unless you have only recently emerged from a Louisiana swamp, you have probably already heard the news:  there’s this reality show on A&E called DUCK DYNASTY and, well, it’s kind of a big deal. One of the biggest deals around, actually. Now in its fourth season, DUCK DYNASTY has – on four different occasions – beaten its own record as the most-watched show in the history of the A&E Network. The show’s ratings have increased steadily and significantly each season, and last month the show established itself as a bona-fide pop culture phenomenon when it became the most watched nonfiction telecast in cable television history. Regardless of how you define “nonfiction,” this is ...

Six Lessons for Girls From BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
October 05, 2013

By Evy Baehr, Executive Managing Editor 1. Others may be focused on superficial things, but those who read can learn more about themselves and the world.       2. You probably won’t have many friends (or get the girl) if all you do is focus on your appearance and the superficial things in life.     3. Don’t accept every man’s dating invitation.       4. Love and support your father.      5. It’s more fun to put others first and to be hospitable.        6. Don’t judge a book by its cover. God tells us to love everyone and that anyone can be transformed through love.      ...

What Did Rosie the Riveter Have That We Don't Have?
What Did Rosie the Riveter Have That We Don't Have?
October 01, 2013

By William David Spencer, M.Div.,Th.M., Th.D.Ranked Adjunct Professor of Theology and the Arts For a long time now we have been gravitating toward 1940s movies even though most of them were made before we were born.  We like movies from this era because they tend to be more moral than many earlier and later movies. For one thing, there are consequences for actions. For another, successful, strong, and moral women are presented as the norm, especially during the war years. Ted Baehr, founder and publisher of Movieguide and chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission, in his recent book :How to Succeed in Hollywood (Without Losing Your Soul)," confirms our preferences. He cites the noted singer and actor Pat Boone, who r...

Although major movies often do much better at the box office, that amount is a record for NCM Fathom Events, a company that broadcasts live event simulcasts.  UNSTOPPABLE, which ran on 700 screens as a one-night live event, featured live musical performances from Liberty University in Virginia, where Kirk Cameron himself introduced the movie and moderated a Q&A session. Kirk Cameron told The Hollywood Reporter, “We were hoping for good numbers, but weren’t expecting this to be quite so exci...

The Hopes and Hazards of A La Carte Cable
The Hopes and Hazards of A La Carte Cable
September 25, 2013

By David Outten, Production Editor Why would the many Christian television networks side with the major Hollywood studios in opposing giving customers the power to buy only the channels they want, as opposed to bundles of channels?  Most communities in America have had cable lines for a long time. In the early days, cable companies were granted monopolies in communities because the chosen company had to invest considerable sums wiring a community. A company with this monopoly could then decide how to bundle networks into packages it could then sell to customers. The technology available today could blow this whole distribution model up and easily give customers the right to create their own package of channels they desire. This dist...
