What You Need To Know:

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE is the story of a young owl, Soren, who believes in ancient stories of the Guardian owls who preserve goodness. Soren is captured by a group of evil owls that call themselves “the Pure Ones.” The Pure Ones are preparing to battle the Guardians in order to gain power. Soren learns to fly away, however. And, with a group of misfits, he reaches the Guardians to tell them the truth. The Guardians fight against the Pure Ones in a clear depiction of good versus evil as they stand for what is true, honorable and virtuous.

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS is beautifully crafted, exciting animation. It gives the feel of a real owl soaring above the Australian desert. The main character heroically strives for honor, virtue and truth. Thus, the movie has a clear depiction of good versus evil. It also encourages viewers to fight for goodness and justice no matter what. Caution is advised for younger children under 10, however, because the movie is sometimes serious and the evil owls are scary. Otherwise, family viewers will really enjoy LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS.

(BBB, CC, Ro, ACAC, V, M) Very strong moral worldview with strong redemptive elements of good versus evil and honor, truth, duty, virtue, healing the broken, protecting the weak, and vanquishing evil by serving others and loving the truth of the ancient stories, with some minor Romantic elements but set in the context of believing in the True Words, plus some strong anti-totalitarian (ACAC) content that is anti National and International Socialism, i.e., fascism and communism; no foul language; some scary violence as fantasy owls fight each other with swords, knives and claws; no sex; no nudity; no alcohol; no smoking; and, rebellion and villains consider themselves pure ones who are superior to others and want power to rule.

More Detail:

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE is an action packed animated film that soars to do the right thing.

Soren, a young owl, believes in ancient stories of the Guardian owls. Soren and his rebellious brother Kludd are captured by “the Pure Ones,” a group of evil owls trying to gain power. Once they are captured, Soren speaks up against the Pure Ones, while his brother longs for the power and decides to turn away from his brother.

Soren makes friends with a tiny owl named Gylfie. They are helped by an older owl, who teaches them to fly and tells them that the stories of the Guardians are real.

Soren and Gylfie are young and hardly know how to fly, but they turn out to be the only hope to get to the Guardians. They take on the challenge and, while on their journey to the Guardians, they meet a few other misfits, Digger, Twlight, and Mrs. Plithiver. Each has their own traits that allow them to work together in helping stop evil.

Once the group reaches the Guardian’s home, the Great Tree of Ga’Hoole, Soren is amazed to find out all of the stories he believed so ardently in are real. He meets his hero Ezylryb, who has taken a physical toll from the wars he has fought. Ezylryb continues to tell Soren that doing the right thing is what we should strive for, even though it may not be glorious. As Soren and his friends train to be Guardians, however, Ezylryb does teach Soren to follow his “gizzard” or instincts and feelings instead of his head.

Meanwhile, the Pure Ones are stealing young owls, telling them they are orphans, and putting them into a trance state so they will help create a dangerous force that binds the enemy while they are being attacked. The Pure Ones’ motive is to gain power, believing they are the pure owl race.

Soren tells the Guardians of the plans of the Pure Ones. The Guardians question him, but Soren stands up for what is right and once again emphasizes his belief in the Guardians before he even met them, because he knew the stories were real and truth is real.

Taking action, the Guardians move into battle to fight against the Pure Ones. They repeat the motto to “mend the weak, heal the broken and vanquish evil.”
