Summer 2013 Box Office: Family Movies & Movies with Christian Content Rule

By Dr. Ted Baehr, Publisher, and Dr. Tom Snyder, Editor

Year in and year out, the Christian Film & Television Commission® and Movieguide®’s annual study of the movie box office figures proves that wholesome family-friendly movies and inspiring movies with Christian faith and values, no graphic foul language, sex, or nudity, and strong conservative, patriotic elements make the most money, especially when compared to movies with Anti-Christian, Anti-American, leftist values and abundant foul language or explicit sex and nudity.

Statistics for this summer’s box office are just the latest example proving this well-founded axiom. In fact, they have been extremely positive.

The winners of the Summer 2013 Box Office so far have been two family movies, DESPICABLE ME 2 and MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, followed by the heroically redemptive IRON MAN 3 where the hero visits a Christian memorial for martyred soldiers, the Vin Diesel movie FAST & FURIOUS 6 which ends with a prayer to Jesus Christ, MAN OF STEEL, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Superman movie where a Christian priest talks to Clark Kent about faith while they both stand in front of a beautiful stained glass painting of Jesus, and THE CONJURING, a Pro-Christian horror movie that shows the evils of witchcraft.

Although the number seems to be declining, the latest demographic statistics show that 76% of Americans, or 239 million people, identify themselves as Christian. About the same number of people says that Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead.

In addition, according to a 2011 report, 69 percent of children live with married, heterosexual parents, the definition Jesus Christ gives for family and marriage in Matthew 19:1-12.

Given all these demographic statistics, is it any wonder that American movies demand family friendly movies and Pro-American, patriotic movies with Christian content and values.

Many filmmakers and studio executives in Hollywood already know these findings. Some of them even work with the Christian Film & Television Commission® and Movieguide®.

Is it any wonder, then, that movies like DESPICABLE ME 2 and MAN OF STEEL reflect these truths and keep getting made?

The filmmakers and studio executives who don’t know about these findings, or who ignore them, have no one to blame but themselves. The Commission and Movieguide® don’t do things in a corner. And, we’ve been sharing our findings with Hollywood for 21 years.

Even so, contrary to the teachings of modern educators, repetition is key to learning. Without it, you won’t learn, much less know, anything.

The good news is that Hollywood filmmakers and studio executives can get a copy of the book HOW TO SUCCEED IN HOLLYWOOD (WITHOUT LOSING YOUR SOUL) from Movieguide® and learn all about what kinds of movies, and what kinds of stories (including what kinds of story structures), have the best chance of succeeding at the box office.

The facts are inescapable. What matters is whether Hollywood decides to put them into practice.
