2012 Creators OK Destroying Jesus, But Not Mecca

Director Roland Emmerich tells Yahoo Movies that he thinks destroying cities makes for good storytelling. The director of INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA, and THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW certainly has had success with blowing things up.
But, in his latest end of the world movie 2012, there's one place he decided not to blow up - the Muslim city of Mecca.
Emmerich says, "Well, I wanted to do that (destroy Mecca), I have to admit, but my co-writer Harold (Kloser) said, ‘I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie.' And he was right."
A death fatwa - a legal order of death by an Islamic imam - has been issued against novelists and cartoonists, revealing, among other things, a lack of a collective sense of humor among Muslims.
Emmerich didn't have any trouble, however, depicting the destruction of the dome at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican or the large Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. He didn't fear that Christians the world over would take it as a holy responsibility to kill him for depicting those scenes in a movie.
Seems that Christians do indeed practice that "turn the other cheek" and "love thy neighbor" commands.
Christianity is the true "religion of peace," not Islam.
