The movie follows the story of Bernie (Kevin Hart) and Danny (Michael Ealy), two single guys in Los Angeles. Bernie is a womanizing playboy, while Danny is a nicer guy recovering from a breakup with his longtime girlfriend. Bernie surprises Danny by staying involved with a wild woman named Joan (Regina Hall). He invites Danny to meet her. When her best friend Debbie (Joy Bryant) comes along that night, Danny and Debbie have a one-night stand of their own.
While Bernie and Joan are shown as wild and raunchy, Danny and Debbie are idealized as the perfect, “normal” couple. Over the course of a year, however, the movie shows the complications that ensue for each of the two couples as the four lead characters learn to overcome their fears of intimacy and commitment and work their way towards cohabitation as a sign of their maturity.
On this surface level, ABOUT LAST NIGHT is like countless other romantic or sex comedies, but the cast performs with a great deal of appealing energy that admittedly is sometimes entertaining. Kevin Hart in particular is easily the most dynamic black comic actor since the early heyday of Eddie Murphy’s career. Meanwhile, Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant form a realistic couple with more emotional depth. Also, veteran character actor Christopher MacDonald has a great supporting role as a bar owner who serves as a mentor for Danny. The movie looks good, too, with glowing depictions of Los Angeles, and director Steve Pink pulls everything together in a stylish form.
The huge problem with this movie is that it’s overloaded with raunchy, sometimes even gross, sexual humor and scenes. People of faith and values are sure to be offended at numerous points, some of which are so over the top that they may also offend non-believers (in fact, studies show that many non-believers can be just as offended by such things as people with a biblical faith). It’s a shame that the filmmakers and cast feel such filthy humor is needed to make an impact on today’s audiences, but sadder still is that ABOUT LAST NIGHT is likely to be a big hit due to Kevin Hart’s popularity, which may inspire future movies to follow its dirty path.
Finally, ABOUT LAST NIGHT also has a completely nonchalant attitude toward premarital sex and cohabitation. This immoral viewpoint, combined with the raunchy parts, make ABOUT LAST NIGHT abhorrent and unacceptable for any moviegoer.
