Content:

(BB, Pa, C, P, AP, LLL, VV, A, MM) Strong moral worldview as murderers investigated but marred by seeking revenge and not justice, some Catholic Christian elements, including references to an afterlife, plus both Pro-American, patriotic and Anti-American, anti-patriotic content; 34 strong obscenities, mostly the “f” word, and six strong profanities; two men fight on two occasions, woman graphically shot with much blood and emotional impact, three men shot in head, woman graphically hit by car, and people deliberately poisoned; no sexual content; no nudity; drinking of alcohol; no smoking or drug use; and, main character seeks and achieves revenge, conspiracy and lying by top government agencies.

Summary:

EDGE OF DARKNESS is an emotionally charged thriller about veteran policeman Craven who must investigate the murder of his young adult daughter who had gotten involved in a very large corporate and political conspiracy. While the action is terrific with great acting, it is marred by a revenge motive along with very strong foul language and strong action violence.

Review:

EDGE OF DARKNESS is an emotionally charged thriller about veteran policeman Craven (played by Mel Gibson) who must investigate the murder of his young adult daughter. At first, it looks as if Craven himself was the target, but Craven discovers that in fact his daughter had gotten involved in a very large corporate and political conspiracy.

Craven becomes the target of the conspiracy as everyone involved begins to be killed. Craven learns that his daughter had become a whistle blower at the nuclear research facility where she worked because she thought the company was making nuclear missiles to harm America. Ultimately, however, the conspiracy is that the US government is manufacturing missiles made to look like they came from an Islamic jihadists (a leftist fantasy).

Craven seeks revenge with no intent to arrest or bring to justice. He ultimately gets his revenge, but not without more personal tragedy.

EDGE OF DARKNESS is a well-made thriller with plenty of action but also a strong emotional connection between the father and the daughter. The filmmakers achieve much sympathy for Craven and for his murdered daughter as Craven remembers her as a young girl in many flashbacks.

The acting is terrific and very poignant. The car chases and political intrigue are strong, and it’s never quite sure what will happen next.

Regrettably, however, the movie is ultimately about seeking and getting revenge. The filmmakers attempt to create such sympathy for Craven that his revenge becomes understandable.

Craven’s daughter acts as a true patriot, blowing the whistle on what she thinks is potentially harmful for Americans. Actually, the conspiracy hints at the left wing conspiracy theories that the US government “creates” terrorist activities such as 9/11. While it is not overt nor a big part of the movie, it is there.

There is much violence as would be expected in a thriller that is very realistically portrayed. [SPOILER ALERT] There is also a visual shot that indicates that father and daughter are joined together in the afterlife as we see the two of them (both now dead) walk away arm in arm.

EDGE OF DARKNESS has much to offer as a compelling thriller but the amount of strong foul language and the revenge motif require extreme caution and discernment.
