HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS is entertaining, but a bit long. Simon Pegg plays the title character and delivers a likeable performance. The cinematography is also well done and some scenes are very creative. However, the movie has a Romantic, relativistic worldview. It concludes that emotional love is the thing that makes people happy, but with no absolute truths. HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS also has lots of strong foul language, some lewd content, a visit to a Buddhist temple, violence, and references to palm reading, drug dealing, and homosexuality.

HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS is about a man having a bit of a crisis when he does the same thing every day but doesn’t feel happy, so he decides to go on an adventure to find the meaning of happiness. HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS has a Romantic, relativistic worldview with strong negative elements.
Hector is a psychiatrist who does the same thing day after day. He goes to work and listens to his patients, but doesn’t feel happy. Even though Hector has a beautiful girlfriend, Clara, he still always wonders about his past love, Agnes.
Finally, Hector reaches a breaking point and screams at his patients, implying they have petty problems compared to the rest of the world. Hector then tells Clara he isn’t completely happy and wants to leave the country to research what makes people happy. Shocked because this is so out of character for Hector, Clara still supports him and helps him get on his way.
Hector’s first stop is China. Once boarding the plane to China, Hector sits next to Edward, a wealthy businessman in first class. For Edward, happiness means spending money and getting women. Showing Hector this exorbitant lifestyle, the two go to a nightclub, where Hector meets a beautiful Chinese woman. They talk all night and when the time comes to part, she goes with Hector to his hotel. Thinking relationships and women are happiness, Hector writes in his notebook that this is the key. In the morning though, she leaves Hector, and he finds out she was a prostitute. Saddened by this, Hector tries to get her out of her situation, but fails.
The next stop Hector makes is Africa. He takes a cramped plane and makes a friend with those sitting by him. A woman invites him to her family’s home to have a real African dinner. On the way back, Hector takes a taxi at night. The taxi is taken over by militant rebels, and they take Hector to their base. Hector is tortured and beaten. During this harrowing experience, Hector re-evaluates his life and decides he still would like to visit his long-lost love, Agnes.
HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS is well done, but a bit long. The story goes on a bit but is mostly entertaining. Simon Pegg plays the main character, Hector, and gives a likeable performance. The cinematography is also well done and some scenes are depicted in a creative, artistic way.
Regrettably, HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS has a Romantic, relativistic worldview. The movie stresses that love is the thing that makes people happy, but with no other absolute truths. The movie is almost the British version of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, but has many more problem areas. For instance, Hector lives with his girlfriend and sleeps with another woman. He also goes to a Buddhist temple and meets a drug dealer. The movie also has multiple obscenities and profanities.
Of course, the real meaning to life resides in the love and liberty that only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, our Divine Savior who died for our sins, can bring.
