Review:

101 REYKJAVÍK is the worst introduction moviegoers can possibly have to the state of movies in Iceland. It may be the filthiest foreign movie ever released in the United States.

The protagonist of this movie is a twentysomething unemployed slacker named Hlynur. Hlynur still lives with his hash-smoking mother, who has divorced her alcoholic husband, Hlynur’s father. Hlynur constantly complains about the boring life in Reykjavík, the nation’s capital, and wonders why there is no good pornography on TV during the day. Hlynur hangs out at the local pub, where everybody gets drunk on the weekends, then goes to spend the night with their sexual partners. Hlynur, however, is not really a ladies man and is ambivalent toward his sometime girlfriend, Hofi.

Hlynur’s mother invites her sensuous friend Lola, an English-speaking flamenco teacher from Spain, to stay with them over Christmas. When his mother goes away to visit some relatives, Hlynur and Lola get drunk and have a passionate sexual affair, even though Lola is an avowed lesbian homosexual. Then, however, Hlynur’s mother announces that she is herself “in love” with Lola. Complicating the situation is the fact that both Lola and Hofi appear to be pregnant with Hlynur’s children. Lola and his mother announce that they plan to raise Lola’s child together. Hlynur angrily storms out of the house and tries to commit suicide. He returns, however, to live with his mother, her lesbian lover and his son and his “brother.” The movie never tells viewers whether the mother finds out who the child really is.

101 REYKJAVÍK contains many sex scenes of various kinds, including incest when Hlynur dreams about his mother and Lola. It also includes graphic nudity and plenty of foul language. Finally, there is a scene where Hlynur fantasizes about slaughtering his relatives with a shotgun during Christmas dinner. Someday, there will be a copycat crime in Iceland, or even in other places, based on this movie, judging from past history of such scenes in movies and videos. This movie is pure pornography, and pornography is just not very interesting, artistically speaking.

101 REYKJAVÍK intentionally reveals just how bankrupt the social welfare state really is. Lola berates Hlynur about being lazy and lacking purpose in his life, and Hlynur eventually does get a job. Unintentionally, however, the movie also shows why the “Sexual Revolution” pushed by hedonists like Hugh Hefner of PLAYBOY, liberal feminists like Hillary Clinton and homosexual lobbyists like Elizabeth Taylor is also totally bankrupt. The goal of their “revolution” is nothing less than the breakdown and complete re-definition of the Family and Christianity, and that’s exactly what this movie from Iceland depicts. There’s even a scene at the end where Lola and Hlynur’s mother go to a Christian church to have their baby christened by a priest. Clearly, this fictional priest, like so many real religious leaders in America, has squandered his moral heritage. Next time someone tells you that being tolerant of homosexuality is not harmful to the Family or Christianity, just point to this movie to prove how terribly wrong and misguided they are.
