(Pa, BB, C, P, FR, LLL, VVV, S, N, A, DD, MM) Light mixed pagan worldview with strong moral, light redemptive elements and some American values opposing tyranny, light false religious element as woman paints fantasy pictures of women looking like a native goddess but no specific religious points seem to be made, plus one scene set in a church but the movie draws nothing really positive from that setting; at least 39 obscenities (including some “f” words) and three strong GD profanities; very strong war and action violence with significant images of blood includes gunfire, including machine guns that mow down soldiers, gunfire cuts man quickly in half but camera does not linger, knife chops off man’s hand, man twists knife into villain soldier’s neck, knives thrown at soldiers, hand to hand combat throughout, punching, kicking, stabbing, explosions, bombs, chase sequences, car chases, villagers are killed execution-style, evil regimes are overturned, knife fights, necks broken, villain burned with fire, men shot in chest, it is implied that a man has slapped woman around as her face is bruised, another woman is hit by mercenary and tortured with water-boarding; no sex scenes but two evil soldiers call captive woman a whore in Spanish and clearly want their way with her before they are stopped, unmarried couple hug and one man apparently has gone through a series of girlfriends; naturalistic upper male nudity in a few scenes and some female cleavage; beer consumed; cigar smoking and pipe smoking and ex-CIA agent works with militaristic regime to smuggle cocaine, plus one soldier is said to have become a junkie of some sort; and, strong miscellaneous immorality such as lying, blackmail, mercenaries, politics of greed, repressive militaristic regime threatens and terrorizes villagers and arrests local natives, and revenge.

THE EXPENDABLES is a violent, high intensity, macho action movie loaded with an A-list cast of action stars including Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jason Statham. The story, about a group of mercenaries overturning an evil regime in Central America and saving a damsel in distress, offers plenty of excitement and a few thoughtful moments, but the violence and strong foul language require extreme caution.

This team specializes in getting into and out of impossible, politically-charged situations that politicians would never go near, such as their latest job: overturning an evil, Central American, militaristic regime working with a corrupt CIA agent to smuggle drugs into the U.S.

These men never get emotionally involved. They go and complete their job and collect their pay. They are not heroes, and they don’t stand for anything. They are merely soldiers for hire – plain and simple. This particular job gets complicated, though, when Sylvester Stallone’s character is influenced by Sandra, the daughter of the general leading the evil regime. Sandra heroically stands against her father, even at the cost of her own safety.

Stallone, moved by her heroism and bravery, faces a dilemma of conscience when he learns she has been captured by the rogue CIA agent and his henchman, who are working with the her father to grow and process cocaine. Now, he and the rest of his team must go on a suicide mission to rescue her and overturn the evil regime.

Simply put, THE EXPENDABLES is an action movie on steroids. It is filled with plenty of action and plenty of war violence with a high body count. Written by, directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone, the movie delivers the entertainment goods. It even manages to create sympathy for Stallone’s character, who is trying to re-discover his soul by saving the damsel in distress. As such, the movie serves as a good, though violent, vehicle highlighting the star-studded cast, which features some of the most well-known action stars from the 80s, 90s and today. The acting is better than most of the 1980s action movies on which stars like Stallone cut their teeth. The violence and strong foul language, however, require extreme caution.

However, THE EXPENDABLES has plenty of very strong violence and strong foul language, so extreme caution is warranted.
