What You Need To Know:

THIS IS 40 is a foul-mouthed comedy about getting older. Debbie and Pete are married, with two daughters. They are both turning 40 the next few days. Insecurities about getting older have led to insecurities about their relationship. Making matters worse, one of the employees in their boutique clothing store has stolen $12,000. Also, Pete’s music label isn’t doing well, but Pete has lent his father $80,000 in the last two years. Pete hides the truth about his business from Debbie, who unexpectedly becomes pregnant. When she finds out, it puts a new strain on their marriage. Everything comes to a head at Pete’s birthday party.

THIS IS 40 meanders a bit because there’s no single plotline. For example, the movie is about parent-child relationships and marital relationships, not just insecurities about turning 40. Also, THIS IS 40 lacks a strong moral, religious center. MOVIEGUIDE® recalls only one possible positive mention of God, but more than 180 obscenities and profanities. Despite some clear heartwarming moments, getting married and having children just seems to be a lot of bother after watching THIS IS 40.

Content:

(PaPaPa, B, H, O, LLL, V, SS, NN, A, DD, MMM) Very strong mixed pagan worldview with some light moral elements to give the movie some kind of real meaning, some humanist tones of running your life and your family’s life on your own without God, plus brief talk about astrology while discussing personal compatibility between an unmarried man and woman and references to being Jewish in a mixed married couple situation, and a joke is made that all Jewish men begin to look like a rabbi after turning 50, but no real religious beliefs are shown, though God seems to be acknowledged positively once; at least 145 mostly strong obscenities (mostly “f” words, including several by a teenage girl), 12 strong profanities, 17 light profanities, and an obscene gesture during the story with at least 20 obscenities and three light profanities in an outtake scene during the credits; light violence includes man riding bike crashes into man’s door when it opens suddenly, and they get into a fight, leaving the bicycle man slightly bloodied and going to the hospital with a cracked rib; depicted marital sex with rear male nudity obscured by shower door, obscured oral sex, and some other strong sexual references, plus female employee admits she’s an escort to get extra money and usually fornicates sometimes during the ”date” but never more than 10, 15, or 20 times a year, or 10 to 30 times a year; upper female nudity in two scenes and rear male nudity during sex scene, plus upper male nudity; alcohol use; smoking and comedy scene where married couple gets high after eating multiple cookies laced with marijuana; and, much lying, husband hides his business failures and his loans to his father from his wife, insecurities about getting older leads to questionable decisions, teenage daughter talks back to parents, sisters fight with one another, woman berates a young teenage boy who dissed her daughter on Facebook and makes him cry, and her husband later insults the boy’s mother, but they both deny it during a school conference, which makes the boy’s mother go profanely ballistic.

More Detail:

THIS IS 40 is a foul-mouthed comedy about getting older. The “f” word is liberally sprayed throughout the picture. There are also some strong profanities, some lewd sexual content and brief nudity.

Debbie and Pete are married, with two daughters. They are both turning 40 the next few days. Insecurities about getting older have led to insecurities about their relationship. Making matters worse, one of the employees in their small boutique clothing store has stolen $12,000, Pete’s music label isn’t doing well, and Pete has lent his father $80,000 in the last two years.

Pete is hiding the truth about his business from Debbie. When she finds out, it puts a new strain on their marriage. Also, Debbie hesitates telling Pete that she’s unexpectedly become pregnant. Everything comes to a head at Pete’s birthday party.

If you take away the constant R-rated foul language and the lewd content, THIS IS 40 could have been a great comedy for mature audiences. Judd Apatow, the director and writer, clearly has a talent for comedy and drama. His movie’s few clean moments, including a couple laugh-out-loud lines, show this to be true.

That said, THIS IS 40 meanders a bit because there’s no single plotline. For example, the movie is about parent-child relationships and marital relationships, not just insecurities about turning 40. Also, Pete and Debbie’s financial problems consume a big part of the movie.

Finally, THIS IS 40 lacks a strong moral and religious center. MOVIEGUIDE® recalls only one possible positive mention of God, but there are at least 32 examples of profanities using God or Jesus. Also, despite some clear heartwarming moments, getting married and having children just seems to be a lot of bother after watching this movie.
