(Pa, B, C, CapCap, L, N, M) Popular musicians perform secular music for fanatic fans mixed with some behind-the-scenes material, a visit to a church for a wedding, strong capitalism with band well aware their success is dependent on serving their fans; one mild obscenity and two uses of “Oh, My God” and one flippant use of the name of Jesus; no sex; upper male nudity in dressing rooms and elsewhere revealing that some of the boys like tattoos; no alcohol; no smoking or drugs; and, incredible levels of fan worship and tattoos displayed.

Summary:

ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US documents the story of five English boys from humble beginnings who soar to stardom and go on an incredibly successful international musical tour. Movieguide® recommends caution because, while relatively clean, the music and story are secular, promoting a worldly, as opposed to Godly, worldview.

Review:

Like The Beatles, The Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber, the band One Direction became a huge hit with teenage girls – worldwide. ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US documents the story of five English boys from humble beginnings who soar to stardom and go on an incredibly successful international tour.

The five boys were among many who auditioned for the British program THE X FACTOR. Simon Cowel (best known in the U.S. as a judge on AMERICAN IDOL) selected the five to become a group for the competition. They came in second place, but developed a fanatic female fan base. With the help of the Internet, their fans made them international stars.

ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US largely covers an international tour by the group showing some behind-the-scenes chatter among the boys and the astounding adulation of their fans. It comes across as a bit of a One Direction public relations piece as the boys appear friendly, drug and alcohol free, and truly appreciative of their fans. With throngs of adoring female fans, the only interest the boys show in the girls is in the lyrics of their songs.

The movie shows that five boys from very ordinary families can strike it rich, but it shows that there’s a lot of commitment and hard work required to do so. The movie also shows some of what you lose with fame. More than once recognition by fans led to efforts to do a little tourism becoming a mob scene requiring police and security rescue. Some humor is provided when some of the boys wear disguises to go unrecognized in public.

With minimal vulgarity and no sex, ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US is aimed to be a hit with their fan base while not offending the parents who might take their daughters to the movie, or buy the DVD. Movieguide® recommends caution because, while relatively clean, the music and the story is secular, promoting a worldly, as opposed to Godly, worldview.
