WHAT WOMEN WANT

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

WHAT WOMEN WANT stars Mel Gibson as Nick and Helen Hunt as Darcy. Nick is a chauvinistic ad executive who accidentally receives the ability to hear what women are thinking. At first, he tries to rid himself of the ability, but later embraces it, realizing that he can further his career by taking Darcy’s thoughts and stating them as his own ideas before she even utters a word.

WHAT WOMEN WANT considers the consequences of being able to “hear” what others are thinking. In many scenes, the man uses this ability for his personal benefit, leading to conniving and deceit. Yet, there are other instances where he uses it to help others, including an unnoticed girl with suicidal thoughts. Eventually, the experience changes the man not only romantically, but relationally as well. This movie’s strong moral resolution is regrettably marred, however, by elements of foul language, sexual references and implied sex. These and the movie’s inability to develop certain characters make the ending not as strong as it could have been. WHAT WOMEN WANT is a funny movie which using some questionable elements to tell the morality tale of a man who changes for the better

More Detail:

The idea of obtaining a gift that allows you to hear another’s thoughts is explored in WHAT WOMEN WANT, a story about a man who receives the ability to hear what women are thinking.

Mel Gibson (THE PATRIOT, BRAVEHEART and the LETHAL WEAPON series) plays Nick Marshall, a divorced, chauvinistic ad executive expecting a promotion which he later finds has gone to someone else. That someone else is Darcy Maguire, a woman known for being a hard-nosed success. His boss, Dan, has hired her due to a growing market of female consumers and to the fact that Darcy is proven in the field. Dan introduces Darcy in a meeting at the firm and gives everyone a box containing products for females in order to spark some marketing ideas.

Nick begrudgingly takes home his box and then tries on everything from pantyhose to nail polish. While in this getup, his daughter Alex and her boyfriend Cameron walk in and are shocked when they see him. Alex is staying with her dad while her mother is on her honeymoon with her new husband. She does not get along with Nick, especially since he has virtually remained completely separate from her personal life.

After Alex and Cameron leave, Nick accidentally falls into his bathtub while clutching a blow dryer and is electrocuted. He wakes up and, though he is a bit groggy, prepares to leave for work. Soon, however, he discovers that he can hear what women are thinking. Stunned, he visits a psychologist whom he once saw with his ex-wife. At first, she remembers Nick as a jerk, but when she realizes his gift, she tells him that he should use it to his advantage.

Nick takes this advice to heart, and furthers his career along by taking Darcy’s thoughts and stating them as his own ideas before she even utters a word. Dan begins second-guessing his thoughts about giving the promotion to Darcy instead of Nick. Things become even more complicated when Nick actually begins to fall in love with Darcy. Soon, he is faced with having to own up to his deceitfulness.

WHAT WOMEN WANT uses an electrical accident to explain a popular, though abhorrent occult belief that someone can “hear” what others are thinking and ponders the consequences of such a gift, which in this instance may be from God. In many scenes, the main character uses this ability for his personal benefit, leading to conniving and deceit.

WHAT WOMEN WANT is a funny movie which using some questionable elements to tell the story of a man who changes for the better.
