Why THE CHOSEN’s Dallas Jenkins Supports Movieguide®

THE CHOSEN Creator Dallas Jenkins on the Movieguide® Awards red carpet with Movieguide® TV Host Evy Baehr Carroll

By Movieguide® Staff

Dallas Jenkins, creator of the worldwide phenomenon THE CHOSEN, recently explained why he loves Movieguide®’s work.

“You guys aren’t just an organization that complains about Hollywood,” Jenkins told us. “You go after and promote and get excited about things that are good.”

THE CHOSEN is a first-of-its-kind series that follows the life of Jesus Christ and His disciples.

According to the Movieguide® review of Season 1:

THE CHOSEN is a faithful adaption of stories in the Gospels. Familiar Gospel characters are given full lives, and Sunday school stories are given new, exciting contexts. The first episodes of THE CHOSEN tell of Jesus’ early ministry, including his healing of Mary Magdalene and calling of Simon Peter. Some creative new stories are imagined as well, such as when Jesus practices his teaching on children.

THE CHOSEN is delightful. At the core of its success is brave, artistic storytelling choices. They bring new life to the familiar tales. The writers balance perfectly between faithful biblical interpretation and a willingness to use their imagination. The cast is adequate for the task at hand, though they tend to fall short when intense, dramatic acting is required. The show is at its best when it leans into comedy and creativity. THE CHOSEN contains some violence, regular depictions of alcohol use and occasional light sexual references. Some episodes of THE CHOSEN warrant caution for younger children. However, a strong, faithful Christian message lies at the program’s heart, which takes seriously the life and miracles of Jesus.

Jenkins also thanked Movieguide® for their support for THE CHOSEN even before it began to make waves.

“Movieguide® said, four years ago [that] there was little doubt that THE CHOSEN will soon become one of the most watched, most impactful and successful projects in the faith-based market history. And this was like, long before THE CHOSEN. That’s cool.”

Movieguide® awarded Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in THE CHOSEN, with the Grace Prize® for Most Inspiring Television Performance.

Additionally, several episodes of THE CHOSEN have been nominated for Movieguide® Awards.

While Seasons 1 and 2 of the hit series are available via the app or other streaming services, Season 3 will premiere this week in theaters following their highly successful theatrical Christmas special last year.

According to the Movieguide® review:

CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHOSEN: THE MESSENGERS is the first theatrical release for the fully crowd-funded series, THE CHOSEN, the first multi-episode show about Jesus Christ’s life and ministry. The event features songs from Phil Wickham, Maverick City Music, for KING & COUNTRY, Brandon Lake, and other musical artists. Intermingled with the music are four Scripture-filled monologues from several of the series’ stars. Finally, a brand new CHOSEN episode focuses on the birth of Jesus Christ from Mary and Joseph’s perspective.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHOSEN: THE MESSENGERS is a joyous, Gospel-focused celebration of advent and the true story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The filmmakers use song, Scripture and dramatic representations to stress the hope that Emmanuel, God With Us, brings to a weary, sinful world. This Christmas special will make viewers want to worship the greatness of God, rest in the mercy of Jesus, and look expectantly to the believer’s future peace with Him in heaven. The music and production in CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHOSEN are masterfully woven together to create a cohesive narrative that surely will stir many hearts this holiday season.
