PLAYING WITH FIRE

Quality:
****
Content:
+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
PLAYING WITH FIRE is an endearing movie about three stranded children who cause comical chaos when they spend a few days with some firemen and smoke jumpers in Redding, California. PLAYING WITH FIRE has a strong moral worldview promoting family, love, marriage, taking care of people, in need, hospitality, and honor. PLAYING WITH FIRE will make children and adults laugh, but merits caution for younger children because of some potty humor, action violence and slapstick comedy.

ARCTIC DOGS

Quality:
***
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
ARCTIC DOGS is about a white fox named Swifty, who dreams of growing up to be a Top Sled Dog at the local Arctic Blast Delivery Service and uncovers a nefarious plot by a wicked walrus to raise the earth’s temperatures and melt the town. ARCTIC DOGS is a playful movie with some whimsical, eccentric characters and a strong moral worldview with redemptive elements about supportive friendships, helping others, teamwork, and sacrifice, mitigated by brief rude humor and some environmentalist elements about a global warming conspiracy.

LAST CHRISTMAS

Quality:
****
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
LAST CHRISTMAS is a funny, heartfelt romantic comedy about a young woman who doesn’t have any motivation for life until she meets a compassionate man who works at a Christian homeless shelter and teaches her a life lesson. LAST CHRISTMAS has a strong moral worldview with overt, positive Christian references about learning to be selfless, but it’s marred by too much foul language and some references to implied sexual immorality, which warrant extreme caution.

WAVES

Quality:
***
Content:
-3 Excessive sex, violence, immorality, and/or worldview problems. (Sometimes excessive content such as violence is in otherwise redemptive movies.)
WAVES follows a black family in Florida that’s led by a loving but dominating father as they navigate their lives following a great tragedy caused by their bad, sinful decisions. Although well produced with fine ensemble acting story and great cinematography, WAVES has a drawn-out ending and a strong Romantic, Non-Christian worldview with abundant gratuitous foul language and teenage substance abuse and sexuality, all of which render the movie unacceptable for mature media-wise viewers.

THE GOOD LIAR

Quality:
***
Content:
-2 Extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.
THE GOOD LIAR is a thriller pitting two of England’s greatest living actors, Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen, in the story of an elderly con man who tries to romance an elderly widow in the hopes of robbing her of her fortune. For the most part, THE GOOD LIAR is a riveting, nicely acted thriller with a light moral worldview about getting justice against an elderly con man and murderer, but the twist at the end seems to defy logic, and the movie contains about 15 “f” words, some disturbing violence and a brief positive portrayal of a homosexual relationship.

DOCTOR SLEEP

Quality:
****
Content:
-4 Intentional blasphemy, evil, gross immorality, and/or worldview problems. (To be avoided)
DOCTOR SLEEP is a horror sequel to THE SHINING, both Stephen King’s original book and Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 movie, and tells how Jack Torrance’s psychic son, Danny, an alcoholic like his troubled father, becomes sober, rediscovers his psychic powers and helps a teenage girl with psychic powers battle an evil cult preying on children. DOCTOR SLEEP doesn’t always explain how the psychic world works, but Ewan McGregor and Ryliegh Curran turn in terrific performances as Danny and the teenage girl who battle the malevolent cult leader and her followers. DOCTOR SLEEP has some poignant uplifting moments, but it also has an abhorrent occult worldview, disturbing violence and gratuitous foul language.
