Five Movies to Celebrate Moon Landing Day

Five Movies to Celebrate Moon Landing Day

By Tess Farrand, Contributing Writer

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth (Gen. 1:1).”

Did you know that this Friday, July 20, 2018 will mark the 49th anniversary of the Moon landing by NASA astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neal Armstrong and Michael Collins?

In order to commemorate the occasion, here are five movies that display technological advancements in space thanks to human ingenuity! Just as Neal Armstrong said, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” some of these movies have pushed innovative technological advancement in filmmaking and storytelling.

  • WALL-E:  WALL-E’s tenderness for the earth, humans and other robots (EVE namely), shows that there is hope despite the impending doom of losing earth for good. WALL-E’s comedic disposition makes this a perfect addition to a family night-in (review).

  • GRAVITY:  In the riveting thriller directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Sandra Bullock plays an astronaut who must figure out how to survive when she finds herself stuck outside her space station. Audiences see how learning how to pray paves the way to a successful way back to earth. (review)

  • APOLLO 13:  This biopic features a whole cast of popular actors including Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton. The astronauts on board the NASA Apollo 13 spacecraft must miraculously navigate back to earth while facing a lack of vital resources (review).

  • HIDDEN FIGURES:  The 2016 movie follows three African-American women as they help to grow NASA all the while, handling motherhood and doubters in the workplace. Their contributions to the success of several space missions show that hard work and faith pay off (review).

  • THE MARTIAN:  Matt Damon stars as a scientist living on Mars after his fellow companions leave to head back to earth. The movie displays his attempts of survival detached from other lifeforms. In his time of loneliness, Damon’s character even reaches out to Jesus in prayer (review).
