"Hopelessly R-Rated Animation"
What You Need To Know:
The stop motion animation in $9.99 is wonderful and the characters come to life effectively. However, too many multiple vignettes along with depressing subject matter results in a disjointed movie with a number of loose, random plots. The characters have nothing in common except an apartment and a nihilistic, pessimistic view of life. The movie contains strong foul language, and plenty of graphic nudity and depicted sex scenes. The collection of worldviews presented are all empty and hopeless. This movie is an abhorrent, bleak experience.
(HHH, PaPaPa, Fr, Ab, B, LL, VV, SSS, NNN, AA, DD, M) Very strong humanist, pagan worldview with some anti-God elements as well as a positive reference to God and a hope of heaven but all with a sense of hopeless; 13 obscenities including many “f” words and one profanity; strong violence includes man shoots himself, man jumps to his death with blood splatter; multiple depicted as well as implied sexual relation scenes between unmarried couple; frontal male nudity, upper male nudity, upper female nudity, rear male nudity, and rear female nudity; alcohol use and drunkenness; smoking of marijuana; and, lying and suicide.
$9.99 is a unique stop motion animated movie centering on Dave, his family and his unusual neighbors in his apartment building and their individual search for meaning in life.
Dave orders books (for $9.99) that promise to explain meaning in life, though they don’t seem to do so, or at least he doesn’t seem to be able to apply what he learns. Unemployed, he tries to work with his older brother but can’t bring himself to re-possess an ex-magician’s goods. Though he cooks gourmet meals and takes delight in it, it never seems to dawn on him to become a cook or chef.
A woman dates Lenny, Dave’s brother. In a surreal twist, she asks him, like her previous boyfriends to have all of his bones removed. It’s considered an act of love, and she uses previous blob-like boyfriends as bean-bag chairs.
A neighbor who won’t grow up and be responsible begins having conversations with three tiny men who only want to drink and smoke marijuana.
An older widower misses his wife and encounters a man who committed suicide at the beginning of the movie and is now an Angel. The older man prays “to the Lord” as he misses his wife. The Angel tells him he himself got to Heaven because he did good things. The Angel tells him that Heaven is great and just like the Sunshine Coast, a nearby beautiful area. However, when the Angel tries to fly, he falls to his death.
A young boy saves his coins that he receives for drinking his milk each day in a piggy bank. However, when it’s time to break the piggy bank, he can’t bring himself to do that and puts the piggy bank in the park, setting it free.
The stop motion animation in $9.99 is wonderful and the characters come to life effectively. However, the multiple vignettes along with their subject matter results in a movie with a number of loose, random plots and characters who have nothing in common with one another except an apartment and a nihilistic, pessimistic view of life.
The pacing is slow and the voices speak mostly in a monotone manner that might be an attempt at realism.
The movie contains strong foul language and lots of graphic nudity and depicted sex scenes. The collection of worldviews presented are all empty. Two characters find some kind of meaning in life as they learn to swim like dolphins. The older man who longed to go to Heaven to meet his wife instead travels to the Sunshine Coast and starts to date another woman. The Angel turns out not to be an Angel at all.
This depressing movie negatively points out the fact that there is no hope in life apart from a relationship with Jesus Christ. When characters try to find meaning in life apart from God, this abhorrent movie is what they inevitably end up with – hopelessness and despair. The ultimate worth of this movie is more like 99 cents, not anywhere near $10.
