"Weak Action Movie"
BANGKOK DANGEROUS is the story of hit man who attempts to complete his last few assassin jobs in Bangkok so he can quit and have a normal life. The movie is filled with plenty of strong violence and some explicit sex and nudity, but there are a few redemptive moments when Joe begins to rethink his ways.
BANGKOK DANGEROUS is the story of a hit man, Joe (played by Nicolas Cage), who attempts to complete his last few assassin jobs in Bangkok so he can retire and begin to have relationships and a normal life. Joe arrives in Bangkok, where he enlists a young man named Kong to act as the courier between himself and his client. Kong brings him the picture of the target and weapons from the client.
Joe violates one of his own rules, which is that he doesn’t get involved with anyone. He befriends Kong and begins to teach him martial arts, eventually including him in the murders. Joe also finds himself attracted to Aom, a young deaf girl who works at a pharmacy he visits. Joe takes her to dinner and begins to fall in love with her and she with him.
Joe’s guard is now down, and his murders begin to go awry. When Aom leaves him after seeing his violent streak, Joe rethinks what he’s doing. With a stricken conscience, he is not able to assassinate a beloved political leader. Instead, he tries to flee. However, his client has kidnapped Kong and so, for once in his life, Joe tries to help someone else. He takes on a small army of thugs to rescue Kong. This leads to a very tragic ending.
An English-language remake of a 1999 Thai movie, BANGKOK DANGEROUS has a few solid action moments and a couple of plot twists. Otherwise, it’s a bit slow and pretty predictable. The story is confusing at times because the bad guy clients speak Thai with no English subtitles. Surprisingly, most of the scenes are understandable because movie bad guy crime lords tend to do and say the same predictable things. However, there is one scene and subsequent action that would have been understood had viewers been able to know what the characters were saying. This was an odd choice by the filmmakers.
This movie is very violent, with murdering people being the protagonist’s chief activity. However, there are two bright spots. The first is that Joe realizes that he can’t live without other people, and so, despite his better judgment, he befriends both Kong and Aom. Also, Joe chooses to not complete the job of assassinating a beloved political leader as he remembers all the hits he has done and how Aom felt when she saw how violent he is.
As an action movie, BANGKOK DANGEROUS doesn’t move fast enough. As a character movie, it doesn’t go deep enough. Besides extreme violence, the movie also contains some explicit sex and nudity and some strong foul language. Therefore, it probably will not attract many moviegoers, including media-wise viewers who should find it unappealing.
