More Detail:

IN AMERICA is a sentimental, uplifting, funny, dramatic, sad, and winsome movie that celebrates America, family life, and the indomitable spirit of Irish immigrants.

Taking place in the early 1980s, the movie tells what happens when Johnny, a poor Irish actor, sneaks into the United States with his sickly wife, Sarah, and their two precocious young daughters, Christy and Ariel. They sell their beat-up station wagon and rent a grungy apartment in a scary, run-down part of New York City. Johnny and Sarah are still mourning their young son who died of a brain tumor. Although they also miss their brother, Christy and Ariel find everything a grand adventure, despite all the problems and the drug addict on the street below asking for change.

Christy, the elder daughter, talks and prays to her dead brother, asking him to grant three wishes at important moments in the family’s lives. She and Ariel befriend a dying African man, Mateo, in the building, who turns out to be a great friend to all.

IN AMERICA is one of the most poignant movies of the year. The two little actresses, Sarah and Emma Bolger, who play the two daughters, are absolutely delightful. Their relationship with their parents, played by Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton, should tug at the heartstrings of the most cynical among us. Director Jim Sheridan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his own two daughters, balances the pathos and winsome comedy on the razor’s edge, keeping viewers glued to the story.

IN AMERICA contains, however, some foul language, a love scene between the parents, and other content that make it a movie for mature audiences. Some viewers may also be concerned that the movie takes a positive view of illegal immigration, which has become a rampant problem in many countries around the world, including the United States. On the positive side, however, the movie shows that, for many immigrants, even the most troubled, America can be a magical haven from the cares and tragedies of life.
