What You Need To Know:

MADE OF HONOR is the story of womanizing Tom who is best friends with Hannah. When Hannah goes to Scotland on business, Tom discovers he has deeper feelings that go beyond friendship. Hannah returns, but brings along her new fiancé, Colin. Based on their years of friendship, Hannah asks Tom to be her Maid of Honor. Tom accepts with the hope of being close to the wedding so he can convince Hannah to marry him instead of Colin.

If this plot sounds familiar, that’s because it is. There are not many laughs, though the movie is enjoyable. There are positive elements in that the heart of the movie is Tom deciding to “grow up” and admit he is in love with Hannah. This includes him coming to “believe in marriage.” While the movie is rated PG-13, it certainly borders on an R-rating with the discussion of Tom’s multiple girlfriends, a sex toy scene, and near nudity throughout. This world is a world where God is never mentioned either positively or negatively. The characters live their lives with no spiritual aspect and romantic love is the highest ideal they accomplish.

Content:

(RoRo, H, B, LL, V, SS, NN, AA, M) Strong Romantic worldview mixed with humanist and moral elements; eight obscenities and six profanities along with sexually vulgar name-calling and man giving friend “the finger”; man hit in face, man slapped by woman, man thrown from horse; implied fornication, much deep kissing, and sex toys discussed and on display; upper male nudity, man’s genitals discussed while in public shower, magazine cover with barely covered upper female nudity, and females in short skirts, low tops, bare midriffs and lingerie; much use of alcohol and drunkenness; no smoking or drug use; and, negative father figure who has multiple marriages and divorces.

More Detail:

MADE OF HONOR is the story of womanizing Tom (played by Patrick Dempsey) who is best friends with Hannah (played by Michelle Monaghan) who has just gotten engaged to “the perfect guy,” Colin (played by Kevin McKidd). According to Tom, he has the best of all worlds because he has a friendship with Hannah and sexual encounters with multiple women. When Hannah goes to Scotland on business, Tom discovers that he misses her and has feelings that go beyond friendship.

Hannah returns from Scotland, but with new fiancé Colin. Based on their many years of friendship, Hannah asks Tom to be her Maid of Honor. Tom accepts with the hope of being close to the wedding so he can convince Hannah to marry him instead of Colin.

If this plot sounds familiar, that’s because it is. The story doesn’t really bring much new that either “My Best Friend’s Wedding” or an episode of “Friends” hasn’t already done. Watching this movie for the first time seems like you have seen it already. That said, Dempsey and Monaghan are very delightful. The movie moves quickly along and is an enjoyable ride. There are many smiles but no big laughs.

The unique aspect to this particular story is Tom needing to blend in with the “other bridesmaids” and help plan the wedding, a group that includes a jilted ex-girlfriend. The scene when Tom’s basketball male buddies have to get ready for the bridal shower is also humorous. The best thing to say is that it’s a charming movie.

There are positive moral elements in that the heart of the movie is Tom deciding to “grow up” and admit that he is in love with Hannah. This includes him coming to “believe in marriage.” However, the movie goes to such extremes to show how immature Tom is at the start, it makes it hard to root for him later when Hannah is about to be married and all he has done is ignore Hannah and use her for emotional support. Tom learns many things, among them the need to communicate his love.

While the movie is rated PG-13, it certainly borders on an R-rating with the discussion of Tom’s multiple girlfriends, a sex toy scene, and near nudity throughout. Strong caution is advised for kids, teenagers and adults. This world is a world where God is never mentioned either positively or negatively. The characters live their lives with no spiritual aspect and romantic love is the highest ideal that they accomplish. There’s limited foul language and brief violence. The ending, though satisfying, was telegraphed early in the movie.
