The remainder of MEN OF RESPECT reveals the deterioration of people who violate their own conscience. As Shakespeare states: "Thus conscience does make cowards of us all."

The title in MEN OF RESPECT refers to the crime brotherhood, and the film itself turns out to be a faithful variation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth." The film cannot be recommended because of the graphic murder and violence, numerous instances of obscenity and profanity, and sexual immorality. Yet, it shows once more the frailty of man as he "struts and frets his hour upon the stage," his life even as a tale "tolt by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

More Detail:

In this contemporary “Macbeth,” set in the Manhattan, Michael, a small-time hood, is suddenly elevated to prominence in a crime family. Like Lady Macbeth, Michael’s wife urges her husband to murder his way to the top, and they suffer the tragic consequences of their foul deeds.

Because Michael is ambitious, but a morally weak, he can conceive of killing his crime boss, Charlie, but is incapable of resolute action. With his wife’s help, Michael murders Charlie, but afterwards, he shakes uncontrollably as Charlie’s ghost looms everywhere.

At first, his wife bolsters his conscience as she washes out his blood-stained shirt. Soon, she begins to experience her conscience. She walks in her sleep (like Lady Macbeth), carries a flashlight and attempts to remove the courtyard’s bloody stains. She does this night after night regardless of Michael’s promptings to sleep.

The remainder of MEN OF RESPECT deals with the seared consciences of Michael and his wife, revealing the deterioration of people who violate their own conscience. As Shakespeare states: “Thus conscience does make cowards of us all.”

The title in MEN OF RESPECT refers to the crime brotherhood, and the film itself turns out to be a faithful variation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” It also bears out Numbers 32:23, “you may be sure that your sin will find you out.”

The film cannot be recommended because of the graphic murder and violence, numerous instances of obscenity and profanity, and sexual immorality. Yet, it shows once more the frailty of man as he “struts and frets his hour upon the stage,” his life even as a tale “tolt by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing.”

The Bible makes it clear that in Christ man does have meaning. As Christians, we can have consciences void of offense toward man and God; so, we will not end up as Michael and his wife did, running from God, themselves and others. How thankful we should be that God has made a life free from a guilty conscience possible.
