VERTICAL HOLD is a six-part DVD that utilizes alternative Christian animation and video formats to humorously and compellingly evoke thought and discussion on the challenges of being a believer in a mad world. Despite a minimal budget, the sketches in the VERTICAL HOLD DVD provide an excellent tool for teaching and group discussion among high school and college students.
Writer/Director Lon Waitman and Vertical Hold Productions have produced a new video/DVD compilation entitled VERTICAL HOLD, a six-part, partially animated, partially live action, animated Christian teaching series for high school and college kids, and young adults. Vertical Hold Productions was formed to provide alternative Christian animation and video products to those seeking out God’s truths in non-traditional formats. This first video compilation does just that in thought-provoking, humorous, and hard-hitting ways.
The VERTICAL HOLD DVD contains the following six sketches, running from about two to ten minutes each:
Evolution – This short animated vignette is a tongue-in-cheek look at the “evolution” of the Christian experience and has received top awards at two major Christian film festivals.
Glory – This ultra-symbolic animation spectacle grippingly portrays the need to see the glory of God in our everyday lives.
Fastlane – This seven-minute clip gives viewers a fast, wild ride with animation, video and special effects. It’s a very convicting look at our hyper-fast-lane Western culture that has no time for the still, small voice of God.
Footprints Revisited – This is a short, hilarious, “love must be tough” version of the classic “Footprints” poem, with a definite piercing edge to it.
Hear the Wind – Possibly the best of the group, this ten-minute piece is a bizarre journey through the “soul noise” of our culture, combining animation, video, and special effects with useful insight into how to hear God’s voice better.
Path of Brilliance and Light – The final sketch of the series is a dramatic, edgy, live performance by Vertical Hold’s Lon Waitman, as seen at Xtreme Moments conferences across America.
The VERTICAL HOLD collection beautifully illustrates the classic filmmaking advice, “Show it; don’t say it.” With fun, edgy, extremely thought-provoking animation, the six sketches are highly symbolic and low on preachy-ness. Though the DVD has certain places where its minimal budget is apparent, the creativity far makes up for the smattering of audio and/or video shortcomings.
Producer Lon Waitman certainly thinks outside the box and is unafraid to try non-traditional approaches to presenting the gospel through skillful animation formats. At a modest price of $15, the VERTICAL HOLD DVD is an excellent teaching and discussion tool for seekers of Christianity, and it will spark deep, soul-searching conversation amongst believers at every level of the faith. Because the series contains a few animated portrayals of drugs, murder, and violence, its target audience is primarily high school and above.
Portions of VERTICAL HOLD have recently been shown on TBN and JCTV. MOVIEGUIDE® hopes that many more series will be forthcoming in future years to meet the unique and ever-changing needs and media tastes of the younger generation.

(CCC, BBB, L, V, A, DD) Christian worldview in six sketches portraying the stark differences between a godless system of thought versus the ways and thoughts of born-again, enlightened humanity, with the Gospel clearly presented through both animation and live action sequences and with strong pro-creation, anti-Darwinian message; one light obscenity; some animated portrayals of violence portraying a stabbing, a demon’s head being sliced off with a sword, and a plane crashing into a building; alcohol use; drug use rebuked; and nothing else objectionable.
