SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS (LA GRANDE SÉDUCTION)

"Who Can You Trust?"

What You Need To Know:

SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS is a delightfully wry French-Canadian comedy that teaches the dignity of work. All the men of the small northern Quebec island of Ste. Marie-La Mauderne are on welfare and families are leaving for the big city, because the island’s stockpile of fish is depleted. Hope remains, however. A company is considering building a factory on the island, but the insurance company requires a resident doctor. Mayor Germain mobilizes all the people to trick a young plastic surgeon into signing the five-year contract. Germain doesn’t count on one thing: he becomes fond of the naïve young man, whom he begins to consider the son he never had.

SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS is very funny. The scenes where Germain realizes the mistake he’s been making and tries to correct it are touching. The movie contains a few strong profanities, however, and sounds of husbands making love to their wives after a day’s work in two scenes. Furthermore, not all the lies and deceit in the story are redeemed, and there are scenes of drunkenness and one scene where doctors snort cocaine. On the other hand, the movie has lots of heart and a positive outcome.

Content:

(B, C, CapCap, LL, V, S, AA, DD, M) Light moral worldview with redemptive elements and strong pro-capitalist message shows the bad effects of a socialist welfare system where families are paid for not working and the benefits of having a steady job, which brings dignity to men; six obscenities and six strong profanities; light hockey violence shown and men get into argument which leads to pushing and shoving and wrestling; sounds of husbands making love to their wives in two scenes and man tells girlfriend over phone that he likes to caress her feet; no nudity; alcohol use and drunkenness; smoking and scene where doctors snort cocaine; and, lying and deceit, not all of which are rebuked, and man finds out his girlfriend has been cheating on him with his best friend.

More Detail:

SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS is a delightfully wry French-Canadian movie reminiscent of classic British comedies. It’s a minor gem that may garner some fans in the small theaters where it will be showing.

The movie opens with the sleep of Germain, a retired fisherman, interrupted by fond memories of his boyhood on the small northern Quebec island of Ste. Marie-La Mauderne. He remembers the men of the village putting in an honest day’s work and coming home to their wives. Now, however, all the men are on welfare, and families are leaving for the big city, because the island’s stockpile of fish is depleted.

Yet, hope remains. A company is considering building a factory on the island, but the insurance company requires a resident doctor. Germain mobilizes his friends to send out query letters to all the doctors in Quebec, but there are no takers. Happily, the town’s former mayor, who’s now a policeman in the big city, pulls over a plastic surgeon, Christopher Lewis, who just happens to have a packet of cocaine in his car. They work out a deal whereby Lewis will practice in the village for one month in exchange for the charges being dropped.

The grand seduction of Dr. Lewis begins. Germain and his friends tap the doctor’s phone to learn more about him. They pretend to learn cricket, a sport Dr. Lewis loves, and even go so far as attaching a fish to his fishing line and leaving money for him to accidentally find. When Lewis begins to think of Germain as his friend, and a father figure, Germain realizes he’s forgotten one thing: how will Dr. Lewis feel when he learns that the whole town has tricked him?

SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS is very funny. The scenes where Germain realizes the mistake he’s been making and tries to correct it are touching. He learns the importance of trust in personal relationships. The movie contains some strong profanities, however, and sounds of husbands making love to their wives after a day’s work in two scenes. Furthermore, not all the lies and deceit in the story are redeemed, and there are scenes of drunkenness and one scene where doctors snort cocaine.
