Miles Pope, a struggling black actor, is forced to disguise his TRUE IDENTITY, when he discovers that a mafia kingpin, whom detectives believe is dead, is actually living under a fake persona, having dramatically altered his face with plastic surgery.
Discovering the criminal aboard a plane to Miami, Miles returns home from an audition for “Raisin in the Sun,” which disappointedly turned out to be a TV commercial for the sun-ripened, dancing kind.
Settling down in his plane seat, Miles meets Leland Carver, a prominent, billionaire owner of a highly-respected theater. Miles desperately tries to market his talents, but only annoys the man. As they speak, the plane begins to rock with turbulence and lose altitude.
Realizing the plane is going down, the passengers prepare for a crash landing. In their final seconds, Mr. Carver tells Miles that he is really Frank Luchino, a former mobster wanted by the FBI for multiple murders. He had plastic surgery to change his looks and staged his own death, starting over as Leland Carver. Unrepentant, Carver ends his “confession” by saying, “See you in hell.”
Miraculously, the plane manages to regain control and land safely at the airport. Everyone sighs a breath of relief, except for Miles and Leland. Now, the mafia don must eliminate the actor in order to keep his TRUE IDENTITY a secret. Subsequently, when the FBI refuses to believe Mile’s story, the actor goes undercover to expose the mobster.
Although TRUE IDENTITY is a suspenseful comedy, its message is to seek revenge by taking the law into one’s own hands. Interestingly, the mobster’s unremorseful confession also defiles him (Matthew 15:11), particularly his mention of perdition. Instead of being truly repentant and seeking forgiveness, the mafia boss maintains his criminal lifestyle in an attempt to cover up his past (Proverbs 26:11). Ultimately, the result of such actions is death.
