AMPTP Offers SAG ‘Last, Best and Final’ Offer

AMPTP Offers SAG ‘Last, Best and Final’ Offer

By Movieguide® Contributor

As the SAG-AFTRA strike stretches over 116 days, studios have put forth a “last, best, and final offer” in an effort to end the conflict.

Guild leaders will look over the offer before coming to a decision.

“There’s a lot to digest here,” an insider told Deadline about the studios’ proposals. “This simply takes time to review and to respond.”

Variety reported, “The offer includes a success bonus for streaming shows, increases in minimum rates, and protections against artificial intelligence.”

Tensions are high as 2024 approaches. If an agreement is reached soon, studios can begin production in January and save their broadcast and content plans.

However, actor Zachary Quinto believes studios are using intimidation to end the strikes.

“The AMPTP is trying to capitalize on fatigue and harness pressure from the industry at large (agencies and studios especially) to break our resolve and have you and your incredible negotiating committee accept whatever it is they’ve thrown at us and say thank you,” he said. “Their decision to use ‘last best and final’ language in their most recent counter-proposal tips their hand and shows that they are relying on intimidation and not fairness to bring this strike to an end.”

Variety added that ongoing differences between the AMPTP and SAG have made finding a resolution difficult.

“There are several essential items on which we still do not have an agreement, including AI,” the union said. “We will keep you informed as events unfold.”

In a Monday meeting, “the two sides appear to have resolved some of the pending issues on AI, which has become the central focus of the talks over the last 10 days.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the debate over AI’s role in the entertainment industry:

Director Tim Burton said AI is “a robot taking your humanity, your soul.”

“In support of the actors’ strike, John Cusack called AI a ‘criminal enterprise.’ And on Saturday, Tom Hanks warned of an AI video of himself promoting a dental plan,” Entertainment Weekly reported.

Zelda concluded her post by slamming the false recreations that AI generates.

“These recreations are, at very best, a poor facsimile of greater people, but at their worst, a horrendous Frankensteinian monster, cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is, instead of what it should stand for,” she said.
