THE NICE GUYS

What You Need To Know:

THE NICE GUYS is a comical thriller about two hard-luck guys who team up to solve a string of murders in 1977 Los Angeles. The movie follows private investigator Holland March and hired enforcer Jackson Healy. March and Healy are initially at odds but team up to find a missing young woman and discover what her connection is to a porn star’s suspicious death in a car crash. With March’s daughter in tow, they investigate the thugs who are also following the missing woman’s trail.

THE NICE GUYS deals with some adult subject matter. For instance, some thugs following the missing woman’s trail are from the porn industry. Yet, Director Shane Black, who co-wrote the script, keeps a light touch on things with some funny banter between Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. Even so, although Black doesn’t dwell on the movie’s violence and lewd content, some of that content is excessive and gratuitous. The movie also has plenty of strong foul language. Ultimately, the moral elements in THE NICE GUYS aren’t strong enough to make it appropriate entertainment for media-wise viewers.

Content:

(PaPa, B, LLL, VVV, SS, NNN, A, DD, MMM) Strong mixed pagan worldview with some moral elements validating blue collar type guys protecting the life of a woman in danger, plus one act of mercy and one plea for mercy (one of the heroes is a widower trying to take care of his teenage daughter); at least 63 obscenities and profanities; some very strong and lots of strong violence includes shootouts, a couple of brief car chases, villain fatally injured crushed by vehicle and then killed, people jump or get thrown off buildings (including one scene featuring two men falling off the top of a high rise building toward a pool with one making it into the water and the other not), man holds another man’s arm behind his back then snaps it as the scene cuts away, car careens off a road and through a house and leaves the woman inside dead and bloody after it crashes, woman is shot point blank from a distance, and one hero sucker punches criminals for money; depicted fornication in film footage from a party and visit to a nude strip club; full frontal female nudity in two scenes and rear male nudity; several scenes where one of the male leads is shown drunk or hung-over while the other is a sober and takes his avoidance of alcohol very seriously; smoking and brief cocaine use; and, government cover up and corruption, plus some deception and trickery.

More Detail:

THE NICE GUYS is a comical thriller about two hard-luck guys who team up to solve a string of murders in 1977 Los Angeles. THE NICE GUYS has a strong, slightly mixed pagan worldview, with some moral elements marred by plenty of foul language, lots of violence and some gratuitous lewd content.

The movie follows private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe). March and Healy are initially at odds but team up to find a missing young woman and find out what her connection is to the death of a porn star. March was hired to investigate the missing woman, while she had asked Healy to protect her from the men who were following her, including March.

Thus, Healy shows up at March’s house to sucker punch him and break his arm to stop March from investigating the woman. However, Healy soon realizes March is a widower raising his young teenage daughter on his own and takes sympathy on him. March also suffers from a drinking problem because of his wife’s death. He and Healy begrudgingly team up together to find the missing woman, who’s disappeared after some news reports on the mysterious car-crash death of a porn actress. With March’s daughter in tow for much of their escapades, they also investigate the thugs following the missing woman’s trail.

THE NICE GUYS definitely deals with some adult subject matter. For instance, some of the thugs following the missing woman turn out to be from the porn industry. Yet, Director Shane Black of LETHAL WEAPON fame, who also co-wrote the script for NICE GUYS, keeps a light touch on things with some funny banter between his two leads, Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. However, although he doesn’t dwell on the movie’s violence and lewd content, some of that content is excessive and gratuitous. The movie also has plenty of strong foul language, though perhaps not as much as some other R-rated thrillers. The negative impact of the objectionable content in THE NICE GUYS is lessened by some positive moral elements. Black has said he considers his movie a nod to blue collar guys, who have tough, but necessary, jobs. It’s also a throwback to some of the R-rated thrillers of the 70s and 80s on which Black first made his fame and fortune. It’s the R-rated excess, including some callous violence, that mars this otherwise entertaining effort. Ultimately, the moral elements in THE NICE GUYS aren’t strong enough to make it appropriate entertainment for media-wise viewers.
