Movieguide®’s Proposal for a High School Media Literacy
Curriculum from a Christian Perspective
Young people today are spending more than 66,000 hours with screens by the time they turn 17, (this is in contrast to the 11,000 hours they spend in school)! They are inundated with media messages from various sources, including social media, streaming platforms, and traditional entertainment outlets. Research is showing that this constant exposure has led to increased anxiety, confusion, and a disconnect from Christian values among teens. While liberal organizations have created curricula to address media literacy, there is a pressing need for a curriculum that approaches this subject from a distinctly Christian perspective.
Our goal is to develop a comprehensive media literacy curriculum for high school students, empowering them to navigate the complex media landscape while maintaining a strong Christian worldview.
This curriculum will:
- Teach students to critically analyze media content through the lens of biblical values, discerning between messages that align with or contradict Christian teachings.
- Provide practical tools and strategies for managing media consumption in a way that promotes mental health, spiritual growth, and responsible decision-making.
- Encourage open dialogue about the impact of media on faith, relationships, and personal development, fostering a supportive community within the classroom.
- Offer age-appropriate resources and recommendations for media content that upholds Christian values and contributes positively to students’ lives.
Movieguide® is uniquely positioned to develop this curriculum, given our 30+ years of experience in analyzing media from a Christian perspective. Our team of experts has a deep understanding of the intersection between faith and media, and we have a proven track record of providing valuable insights to families, churches, and educators. We also have a proprietary system of analysis developed by 60 academics that brings solid backing to our proposed training course.
In creating this curriculum, Movieguide® aims to empower a generation of young Christians to engage with media in a discerning, thoughtful manner. This will not only help reduce anxiety and confusion but also strengthen their faith and prepare them to be positive influences in their communities.
Movieguide® is seeking funding to support the development, implementation, and distribution of this vital curriculum. Your support will enable us to create a comprehensive program, develop engaging materials, and train educators to effectively deliver the curriculum in high schools across the nation.
In a world where media plays an increasingly significant role in shaping young minds, it is crucial that we equip high school students with the tools they need to navigate this landscape from a strong Christian foundation. By partnering with Movieguide® to create this groundbreaking curriculum, the Bradley Foundation can play a pivotal role in fostering a generation of media-literate, faith-filled young people.
