Banning Free Speech Until the Cows Come Home
Banning Free Speech Until the Cows Come Home
April 30, 2014

By Robert Knight  It's hard to think of a more dangerous threat to First Amendment freedoms than the Federal Communications Commission's scheme a few months ago to station government "researchers" in newsrooms. It had all the makings of "1984"-style intimidation of journalists, and it was allegedly abandoned shortly after a public outcry. I say "allegedly" because our betters never give up their quest to dictate to us what is allowable speech. They wait until they think we're not paying attention, and try again. A couple of years ago, they floated, but abandoned, the old Fairness Doctrine, which throttled talk radio before the FCC under President Reagan rescinded it in 1987. In recent days, an even more hare-brained plan has arisen,...

Study: Juvenile Crime Based on Morals, Not Poverty
Study: Juvenile Crime Based on Morals, Not Poverty
April 28, 2014

By Rachal Marquez, Contributing Writer It has long been said that poverty-stricken environments are a major factor leading to crimes committed by adolescents. However, the Peterborough Adolescent and Young Adult Development Study, conducted by Cambridge University, suggests that crime among teenagers is influenced as much or more by their morals as it is by their environments, including their economic background. According to the study, nearly half of adolescent crimes are committed by a miniscule 3.8 percent of teenagers. This group of teenagers averaged 278 offenses each over the course of the five-year study, which followed the teenagers from the age of 12 through 16. It was also found that this small group committed the majorit...

Snatching Defeat from the Blessings of Victory?
Snatching Defeat from the Blessings of Victory?
April 22, 2014

By Dr. Ted Baehr, Publisher, and Dr. Tom Snyder, Editor Some Christians have launched several complaints and opposing viewpoints about the movie HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, which is based on a bestselling book about a little Christian boy who claimed he went to Heaven and met Jesus. Some of these come from Christians we respect highly, and others come from people who are unfamiliar to us and seem to have no faith credentials whatsoever except a trail of anthropocentric booklets refuting many books, movies and people by using practically the same arguments while ignoring the text. In other words, these folks use the unbiblical method of eisegesis, rather than exegesis to attack books, movies and people. As a former L.S. Attorney in the US Atto...

True Love vs. Stockholm Syndrome: Does Hollywood Know the Difference?
True Love vs. Stockholm Syndrome: Does Hollywood Know the Difference?
April 21, 2014

By Amy Swanson, Contributing Writer A friend of mine shocked me recently when she pinpointed the exact moment when she “fell in love” with Sandor “The Hound” Clegane from HBO’s GAME OF THRONES. “He grabbed a man by the throat and lifted him off the ground with one hand and with the other hand reached into the man’s stomach and pulled out his guts!” That’s nice. . . wait. . . what?  When did that become romantic? Back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, women fell for the men in show business with nice eyes and a velvet voice like Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra. As if that alone wasn’t intimidating enough, when did alluring take a turn for the dark and violent? How seriously should we take it? Today, some of th...

Too Much TV Causes Poor Learning, Motor Skills
April 21, 2014

Preschoolers watching two hours or more of television per day can diminish a child’s vocabulary, math skills, ability to pay attention, and physical prowess, a 2013 study from the University of Montreal shows. The study has led the American Academy of Pediatrics to reiterate its recommendation that children watch no more than two hours of TV per day, and that children under two watch no TV at all. The study involved 991 girls and 1,006 boys in Quebec, Canada. - Source:  CBS Atlanta, 08/10/13....

The Promise and Dangers of New Technology: Behind the Scenes of TRANSCENDENCE with Johnny Depp
The Promise and Dangers of New Technology: Behind the Scenes of TRANSCENDENCE with Johnny Depp
April 21, 2014

By Carl Kozlowski, Contributing Writer Ever notice how annoying people are getting with their connections to computers? Everywhere you turn, people have Bluetooths that attach to their ears or Google Glass devices that provide an instant video stream of what our eyes see to the World Wide Web. At what point, do we have to stop and say, “Enough’s enough?” The new movie TRANSCENDENCE takes a powerful look at that dilemma, serving up frightening questions through the context of a thriller about a scientist named Dr. Will Caster, who is at the forefront of research into artificial intelligence (otherwise known as A.I.). As played by Johnny Depp in a rare role that doesn’t require absurd costumes or makeup, Caster seems to be a nic...

You Can Trust the Easter Story!
You Can Trust the Easter Story!
April 20, 2014

By Tom Snyder, Ph.D. The first number one movie at the box office this March was SON OF GOD, which was developed from the last part of the History Channel's blockbuster miniseries in 2013, THE BIBLE. The movie tells the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, including the story of His death and resurrection, as told in the New Testament documents, especially the Gospel of John. The question arises, however: Can you trust what the Bible says about the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Passover, Good Friday and Easter stories in the Bible? Top scholars, historians, and experts have repeatedly confirmed that the Bible is the most historically and intellectually reliable ancient text in the whole world, ...
