Media has an undeniable impact on our lives, especially on the impressionable minds of children. Children are spending more than 66,000 hours with media by the time they reach 17 years old (this is in stark contrast to the 11,000 hours spent at school). With the rapid evolution of technology and the increasing accessibility of content, it is more important than ever to understand the long-term effects of media consumption.  

Movieguide is uniquely positioned to conduct groundbreaking research in the form of a peer-reviewed research study. Movieguide has over 40 years of quantitative data spanning 150 categories of content in all major theatrical releases. This vast amount of proprietary data has the potential to shed light on the impact of entertainment media on the American young person and advance societal understanding of media’s influence, thereby shaping a better future for generations to come. We are currently seeking funding to tap the full potential of our extensive database and contribute to the critical conversation surrounding media’s role in shaping our society. 

Key Goals and Outcomes: 

  • Analyze and interpret 40 years of Movieguide® data to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Conduct rigorous research on the impact of media on children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development.
  • Investigate the relationship between media content and societal issues, such as violence, mental health, and cultural shifts.
  • Collaborate with industry experts, academics, and policymakers to develop evidence-based recommendations for creating positive, impactful media.
  • Publish findings in prestigious journals, reports, and other media outlets to raise awareness and drive change.
