The movie begins with a party where Derek and Clif’s friends are giving them a bon voyage. Derek has discovered he has a brain condition that may kill him at any time. So, he’d like to travel the world with his buddy, Clif, before it’s too late. Clif and Derek both have a desire to be professional filmmakers some day, so they decide to document their trip with first-person movie cameras.
Their trip takes a dark, unexpected turn when Derek encounters a beautiful woman in Paris. While Clif parties with some friends they know, Derek and the woman retire to Derek and Clif’s hotel room. Clif and the friends decide to burst in on them as a prank, but when they arrive, Derek is wounded and unconscious; and, the woman is nowhere to be seen.
Derek soon wakes up, not remembering anything. However, when he starts getting sick and anemic, but suddenly strong, and seems to have an aversion to sunlight, he and Clif are convinced the woman turned Derek into a vampire.
Derek and Clif go on a desperate search for the woman, but how are they going to feed Derek’s new lust for blood?
AFFLICTED is, by turns, scary, gross, and action-oriented. The action scenes come when Derek explores his new powers and when he’s chased or hunted by police. That said, the first-person camerawork, which is borrowed from such movies as BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, CLOVERFIELD, and CHRONICLE, is annoying as well as old hat. Also, the movie’s ending is depressing.
AFFLICTED also has lots of strong foul language and some extreme violence and gory images. Although some people may enjoy the rather unique blend of horror with action, AFFLICTED isn’t good enough, clean enough, or inspiring enough to warrant a look by anyone other than obsessed horror movie fans who don’t mind low-budget R-rated horror flicks. Even so, the creators, who play versions of themselves in the movie, probably have a good future in filmmaking, if they pursue more worthwhile projects.
