Will THE CROWN Be Getting A Prequel Series?

By Movieguide® Contributor

It looks like THE CROWN might be getting a prequel series. Netflix and Left Bank Pictures, who produce the show, have discussed the possibility of another series.

The proposed prequel would start with the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 and end where the original series began, with the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II in 1947.

The prequel series has not been greenlit and is not currently in development. However, there are already plans for THE CROWN’s creator, Peter Morgan, to write the new show.

THE CROWN’s fifth season is set to release in November, with filming for the sixth and final season starting in August.

THE CROWN is one of Netflix’s most critically and commercially successful shows, winning over 20 Emmy awards. Movieguide® has recognized the show as well: THE CROWN: MOONDUST, a season 3 episode, was nominated at the 28th Annual Movieguide® Awards for the Epiphany Prize for Most Inspiring TV Program of 2019, as well as the Faith and Freedom Award for TV.

Movieguide® also nominated Actor Tobias Menzies for the Grace Prize® for Most Inspiring Performance for TV for his role in the episode.

Movieguide®’s review for the episode reads:

“Moondust” is an engrossing episode of THE CROWN. The story poignantly depicts the characters’ emotions. The filmmakers deftly combine the action with soundbites and film clips from the actual events. Christian viewers of “Moondust” will enjoy the episode’s strong Christian worldview. Prince Philip grows from being an apathetic Christian to one of repentance and a need to walk alongside other believers. MOVIEGUIDE® advises a light caution for “Moondust” because of brief, light foul language and some alcohol use.
