Marvel Studios admitted that fans are tired of seeing superhero films.
According to ScreenRant, due to a variety of factors, like “the expansion of the franchise to TV and the hit-and-miss nature of Marvel’s releases in the last five years, audiences aren’t tuning in the way they once were.”
Over the last few years, Marvel has struggled to hit $500 million at the worldwide box office. The best MCU film recently was this summer’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS, as it topped $521 million globally.
However, the MCU seems ready to embrace superhero fatigue with their recently announced series WONDER MAN, arriving on Disney+ early 2026.
In the trailer, filmmaker Von Kovak (Zlatko Burić) says, “Why one more superhero film? Everyone is tired of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? There is an opportunity to reimagine a whole genre of storytelling.”

Per Variety, WONDER MAN is the “alias of Simon Williams, the son of rich industrialist Sanford Williams. After Williams Innovations faces financial troubles due to competition with Stark Industries, Simon ends up accepting an offer from Baron Zemo that gives him ionic superpowers. After over a decade as a villain to the Avengers, Simon ultimately turns over a new leaf and becomes a longstanding member of the team. Later on in his career, Simon gains an interest in acting and moves to Los Angeles, where he works as a stuntman and books minor roles in blockbusters.”
Joining star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Ben Kingsley, Arian Moayed, X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Olivia Thirlby and Byron Bowers. Destin Daniel Cretton, James Ponsoldt, Tiffany Johnson and Stella Meghie will direct WONDER MAN. The executive producers on the film are Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Jonathan Schwartz, Brad Winderbaum, Cretton and Andrew Guest.
Will embracing superhero fatigue head on be enough to regenerate interest in the genre? Maybe. But the MCU does have a few other projects in the works that could pull viewers back in, too.
The fourth installment in the Tom Holland-led SPIDER-MAN franchise, SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, will debut July 30, 2026. Mark Ruffalo’s The Hulk will join the movie as well.
“It’s day one — my fourth-ever day one on SPIDER-MAN. You know, it’s funny. Putting the suit on, it feels different this time, somehow,” Holland said back in August when filming kicked off.
“It’s also the first time we’ve ever had fans on set for day one, so it’s really exciting to share this with them,” he added. “We’ve got some familiar faces on set. You know, Im just going to do my best, hopefully get it right. No pressure.”
AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY, which sees the return of Robert Downey Jr., this time as Dr. Doom, releases on Dec. 18, 2026.
Can Marvel finally defeat moviegoers’ waning interest in superhero flicks with even more superhero content? Time will tell.
