AMERICAN IDOL winner Hannah Harper took some time to praise God during her debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry.
“When I started thinking about AMERICAN IDOL and just praying that the Lord would, if [the show] wasn’t for me, shut the door in my face,” Harper told the audience. “And man, I felt like [God] grabbed my hand, and He said, ‘It’s go time. We’re running baby!’ and we haven’t stopped running. And now we’re here, and it’s so amazing!”
During her performance, Harper was joined onstage by AMERICAN IDOL judge Carrie Underwood. The pair sang Harper’s original song “String Cheese” together.
Harper and Underwood struck up a friendship during the past season of the show, bonding over balancing motherhood with performing.

“Carrie was really encouraging, just as a mom,” she told TV Insider. “She relates. She was like, ‘Anything you need in the industry, I want to be available, help you with whatever you need.’ That was really nice.”
Harper also revealed what her time on AMERICAN IDOL taught her — “Going forward…you just have to be confident in knowing your ability and you’re exactly where you need to be.”
“I walked into the competition feeling small and towards the end I stood taller, not because of my ability necessarily, but knowing that there’s a crowd of people who want to hear what I have to say,” she continued. “That’s a great feeling.”
The mom of three shared another lesson Underwood taught her in an interview with Parade.
“[She told me] the only thing that was real and mattered was my kids and my relationship with my husband, which I think is very important,” Harper said. “I think that’s why so many people admire Dolly [Parton] because she’s such a character. She can put it on and then she can take it off and she can be a separate person, so I’m struggling with that because I take pride in authenticity, of being real on stage and off stage, so just balancing those relationships is going to be hard at first.”
Harper continued, “I think we’ll get it, but, like I said, Carrie just wanted to make sure that I kept a hold of the grasp of reality once everything settled down and just made sure to still focus on the priorities, which is my kids and my husband.”
Harper has just begun her journey in the music industry, but she’s making sure to keep faith and family at the forefront.
