Korie Robertson recently jumped on Instagram to share her guidelines for her family’s peaceful way of life.
“I get so many questions about how do we live peacefully as a family that’s always together and lives so close. I actually wrote a few of these things and I thought I would just kind of expound upon them a little bit,” she said. “So the first one I say is just eat meals together regularly.”
Robertson said many studies have found that eating together without distractions establishes meaningful connection.
“It’s just so valuable to have that time together. Put away the screens. Just talk, chat, tell your highs and lows,” she explained.
Another thing that creates peace is to not take offense easily.
“For our family, literally don’t take yourself too seriously. It’s like one of our mottos,” Robertson explained. “This is an important one. There will be disagreements. There will be things that will come up that will arise that will cause you to be annoyed at somebody or even angry at somebody within your family.”
But Robertson recommends that when that happens, don’t distance yourself from the one you have a disagreement with for too long.
“Here’s the thing. Whenever you’re not sitting face-to-face with someone, it’s very easy to like hold a grudge or stay mad at somebody but whenever you’re face-to-face with them… You’re like, ‘Oh, they’re actually not that bad of a person,” she explained.
It’s also important to let family members be who they are and allow them to do things the way they want to.
“As a family, with all of us living in the same property and everything, you might think, ‘Oh, you all think alike. You all kind of do things alike’ and we don’t. Literally everyone in our family does different things,” she said.
Most of their family goes to different churches on Sundays, too. One of her children homeschools, another has their kids go to public school and another does private school.
“And lastly, have fun together,” she added. “Let your house get messy. As adults we get to have fun, too.”
Robertson’s daughter, speaker Sadie Robertson Huff, says her mom is a “picture of peace.”
She said, “My mom is, like, the biggest help…My mom is the most fearless person I’ve ever met…She just walks into the future and laughs, like nothing bothers her.”
Earlier this year, Robertson shared how she and her family maintained peace through faith after they got famous.
“I feel like I’m dry inside, you know, I need some water, like spiritual water, because it was a lot of just like pouring out during that time period,” she said. “And so it was hard on us, but we both came from families of faith, and so we never lost it. We never lost our faith.”
It was harder than it was before, and they had to be very intentional.
But Robertson said, “My faith today is far deeper than before.”
