Angel Studios continues to beat the odds with the animated Bible movie DAVID reaching number one on the streaming giant Netflix, beating out fellow animated movies GOAT and BEE MOVIE, as well as CREED III.

Christian artist Phil Wickham, who provides the voice of adult David in the movie, shared his surprise at the news of the movie that follows David in the Bible from a shepherd boy who defeats Goliath to becoming king.

“Okay, you guys, I can’t believe this. I got some crazy news in a text this morning, and so I turned Netflix on on my TV, and check this out. DAVID is the number one movie on all of Netflix right now,” Wickham posted. “What in the world, that’s amazing, and what an honor to be a part of this incredible film…and now to see it connect with so many people. [T]his movie’s crazy…what God is doing with it.”

Jordan Harmon, president of Angel Studios, also celebrated the exciting news on social media.

“I believe the DAVID movie is going to be a timeless classic, and we are so happy so many more people are discovering it for the first time,” Harmon posted on X. “We’ve officially had a #1 movie on @PrimeVideo with SOUND OF FREEDOM and now a #1 movie on @netflix with DAVID.”

Wickham, who also wrote “Psalm 8 (Hallé)” for the movie, shared similar sentiments on the timelessness of the movie.

“I think this movie will last decades, I think it will be something our grandkids watch,” he told Crosswalk.

Movieguide® gave it a +1 content score, calling it a “shining example of Scripture filmed artfully for the big screen, with next-level animation and engaging music.”

Maybe DAVID’s Netflix boom shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise after its record-breaking theatrical release last year, with the biggest opening weekend of any other faith-based animated movie, bringing in over $22 million in the US. It earned $87.8 million globally in ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo.

Angel Studios’ upcoming movie coming out July 3, just in time for the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, is YOUNG WASHINGTON. It follows a 22-year-old George Washington, played by William Franklyn-Miller, and Mary Louise Parker as Washington’s mother, along with Ben Kingsley and Andy Serkis,

“Before he was the Father of a Nation, he was a soldier fighting to survive. A single misstep thrusts young George Washington into the center of a global conflict, testing his honor, loyalty, and courage,” the synopsis reads. “As alliances crumble and the frontier erupts into war, he must confront not only his enemies but the man he’s becoming. This is the untold story of Young Washington.”

With the success of DAVID along with the studio’s other hit movies such as SOUND OF FREEDOM, Hollywood is waking up to audience’s hunger for faith-based and uplifting content.
