Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson just shared that Bible verse that gets him through tough times.

“Ephesians 6, starts at verse 14, about putting on the armor of God and just combatting everything,” he said in an Instagram video posted by Jesus Over Baseball. “Because everything in this world wants you to be caught up in your identity and something of this world.”

Henderson continued, “Baseball players, obviously, it’s very easy to get caught up in [having] your identity be in baseball, so being able to have that and just kind of lean on that verse…[it’s] been one that sticks with me pretty close.”

Henderson, who describes himself as a “Child of God” in his Instagram bio, often speaks about his Christian faith.

When he won Rookie of the Year, Henderson started his speech, “First, I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without Him, I wouldn’t be here tonight. I can’t thank Him enough for just blessing me with the ability.”

He and his fellow Christian teammates even have a Bible study group and Sunday chapel services.

“[To] be able to have guys you can lean on in that sense and be able to both have that love of Christ and be able just to coach each other and help each other along the way, it’s been really cool to have those guys that I can lean on, especially being in my first year,” he told WJZ News.

Fellow player, pitcher Danny Coulombe, added, “Obviously for me, and most of the guys, it is the most important thing in our life, even more than baseball. We’re Christians first and baseball players second.”

“For me, it’s just a good reminder that I think there’s a lot expected of us because of where we’ve been,” teammate Kyle Gibson said. “And for me, I believe that love started in the Bible and Jesus is love, and for me, I’m trying to love people no matter who they are.”

In 2024, the Orioles even hosted its first-ever Faith Night, an event where players shared their testimonies.

“It’s important to me, and I feel like a lot of guys in here, to just express our love for God,” Henderson said at the event, via MLB. “To be able to incorporate it into our daily lives, which is kind of tough in the baseball world because of the schedule. We’re playing every day of the week, so being able to show that and help bring somebody else who might not know who He is, is important.”

We love seeing athletes use their platform to glorify God.
