Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins died on Saturday after a dump truck hit him while he walked on a South Florida highway.

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda did not release why the 24-year-old Haskins was on the highway.

“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time,” he added.

Haskins was known for his faith off the field.

“I want to use my platform, use my place in this world right now as a way to benefit and inspire others, and give back to the community, and be someone that they look up to,” Haskins told Decision Magazine after the NFL draft. “That is something I feel like God would want for me to do.”

During his tenure at Ohio State, Haskins said that he and other potential Heisman trophy winners like Tua Tagovailoa exchanged Bible verses to encourage one another before games.

“We sent each other scriptures before the game on Saturday,” Haskins said. “Just send out blessings to each other.”

Prior to his time with the Steelers, Haskins played for the Washington Commanders after selecting the quarterback with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Ohio State.

In a release, Washington’s coach Ron Rivera said: “Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him. This is a very sad time and I am honestly at a loss for words. I know I speak for the rest of our team in saying he will be sorely missed. Our entire team is sending our heartfelt condolences and thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family at this time.”

Haskin’s alma mater honored the former Buckeye with a tweet: “Leader. Legend. Forever a Buckeye.”

Urban Meyer, Haskins’ coach at Ohio State, told The Columbus Dispatch: “He was one of the sweetest kids. The players all loved him. My daughter (Nicki Meyer Dennis) just showed me a picture of him holding our grandson. I’m just heartbroken for that family.”
