Michael W. Smith Releases Song In Aid Of Ukraine: ‘I Can Always Do More…That’s What We’re Called To Do’

Grammy award-winning Christian artist Michael W. Smith has released a new song to help Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.

The new song, “Cry For Hope,” is an instrumental single recorded with the Nashville Recording Orchestra. Smith said he would give Ukrainian aid organizations a portion of the proceeds.

“It’s really different than anything I think I’ve ever written and inspired by John Williams, probably like SCHINDLER’S LIST a little bit,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve ever written a melody that haunting and it has a little hope in it.”

Smith also shared that his team is also supporting Samaritan’s Purse, a humanitarian organization led by Franklin Graham that gives medical care to refugees who have made it to Poland.

“The supplies that they’re sending over are just enormous. It’s just incredible,” he shared. “This need is going to be great for a very, very long time. Can you just imagine just your family and all your memories, and you’re forced to leave everything you’ve known your whole life, and you’re sleeping on a cot at some refugee camp overnight? Try to imagine that happening to us, as Americans. We can’t comprehend that. And that’s what’s happened to those people.”

Smith said he is overjoyed by the reaction from listeners to “Cry For Hope.”

“I’m grateful that music is a healer,” he explained. “You know, it always has been. I’m just praying that this song will give these people some hope. And that they’ll be able to come back stronger than ever, and that this war will end.”

The artist, who has a long history of helping others, says that charitable work is something he feels “called to do.”

“You’re either going to be a rock star or you’re going to be a servant,” Smith shared. “I have the ability, we all have the ability, to alleviate somebody’s pain, we all do. As my friend from England says, ‘Everybody wants to be ‘the man.’ It’s this whole ego thing is everyone wants to be number one, everyone wants to make the most money. So many of us are driven by the wrong things.”

“Some of the most miserable people I know are people who have a lot of things,” the singer continued. “And, some of the happiest people I know are people who give their lives away. I can always do better; I don’t do enough. It’s always a challenge for me, too. I don’t want to run myself into the ground, feeling guilty. But I can always do more. And that’s what I think the Body of Christ, especially believers, that’s what we’re called to do.”
