It’s safe to say most moviemakers aspire to positively impact the lives of their audiences, or at least compel them to ponder a given topic with a different perspective. In the case of one media consumer, the popular franchise SEX AND THE CITY has had less than a sparkling influence.
30-year-old university-educated Christina Saunders was inspired by the show’s most promiscuous character, Samantha – which is saying quite a bit considering each of the leading ladies have a fair share of bedroom scenes – to sleep with 1,000 men in 10 years.
Speaking of her ribald role model, Saunders said, “I wanted to be confident like her. I got hooked on the buzz of one-night stands.”
After travelling the globe and achieving her goal, Saunders is rueful.
“All I want is a man to love me – not one who just wants me for sex,” she says. “All I want to do is settle down. I just hope I haven’t put men off.”
This story further proves that the entertainment industry has an enormous role in shaping audiences’ thoughts, beliefs and behaviors. It is imperative that individuals educate themselves and their families about the philosophies and worldviews functioning behind the empty media facade of spectacular special effects, exotic locations and attractive characters.
