What You Need To Know:

In RELIC, an elderly woman, named Edna goes missing which concerns her daughter, Kay, and granddaughter, Sam, who come looking for her. The movie is set in Australia during an overcast season that mirrors the gravity of Edna’s situation. According to Edna’s daughter, Kay, Edna is getting forgetful in her old age. When Edna suddenly shows up at her house, Kay and Sam hunker down to get to the bottom of what’s really happening with Edna.

RELIC effectively follows many horror movie tropes with several fake outs of intensity, only to increase the tension as the plot develops. The music pairs well with the onscreen action. Also, Robin Nevin, who plays Edna, does a fantastic job creating a troubled character the audience wants to see have a positive resolution. Happily, unlike many horror movies today, RELIC has a strong moral worldview where characters want to help one another despite the obstacles. Also, a character is possessed by a demon, but the demon is considered a bad thing. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for violence, several strong profanities and encounters with a scary demon.

More Detail:

In RELIC, an elderly woman named Edna goes missing which concerns for her daughter, Kay, and granddaughter, Sam, who come looking for her. The movie is set in Australia during an overcast season that mirrors the gravity of Edna’s situation. Kay tells the authorities that Edna is getting forgetful in her old age, which makes Kay all the more concerned.

Suddenly, Edna shows up at her home, where Kay and Sam hunker down to get to the bottom of what’s really going on with Edna. The three generations of women obviously have strife in their relationships with one another. Kay wants Sam to get a “real job” and return to university. Sam wants her independence and decides she will move in with Edna, so her grandmother won’t have to go into a nursing home. Edna seems resentful toward Kay for her random appearance at her home, after insisting she is fine.

However, something clearly isn’t right. Edna talks to voices that aren’t there. In one scene, she insists something’s under her bed. Although she’s forgetting daily activities due to her age, it seems the one thing she’s confident of is that someone is lurking in her house. In addition, Edna’s neighbor has told Kay that his autistic son was locked in Edna’s home for hours one day. Things aren’t what they should be.

One day while exploring the house, Sam gets locked into the crevices of the home and no one can hear her call out. Meanwhile, Kay observes that her mom is acting strange and physically harming herself. Now, the battle is on to save Edna from herself and find Sam.
