Mike Rowe Says Appreciation for Blue-Collar Work Is Necessary to Avoid Country-Wide Consequences
By Movieguide® Staff
DIRTY JOBS host Mike Rowe is open about his support of blue-collar workers—through his foundation Mike RoweWORKS—and the need for more appreciation from other Americans for workers who forego college to pursue a trade.
Rowe recently appeared on HANNITY and discussed work in America with the show’s host, Sean Hannity.
“There are two different things. Realization and appreciation,” Rowe began. “Most of us have never really realized it, but we’ve always intuitively appreciate it. We know that when we flip the switch and the light comes on, that that’s the result of a miracle. And that miracle is made possible by men and women doing things out of sight and out of mind.”
“What I worry about is the overall lack of appreciation that has infected, in my view, our society over the last 30 or 40 years,” Rowe added. “Pop culture has glorified the corner office job while unintentionally belittling the jobs that helped build the corner office.”
One example Rowe gave was that of telecom workers, who made it possible for others to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I think in a lot of ways, COVID gave us a wake-up call, but I’m afraid it did something else, too, honestly,” he said. “I’ll tell you what nobody’s talking about. No one is talking about the 7 million able-bodied men who are not only unemployed today, but who have affirmatively left the workforce.”
“If we don’t fix that, we’re on that part of the map where it says, ‘Here Be Dragons’ because we don’t know what’s coming next,” he said.

Mike Rowe, who rose to fame through the hit series DIRTY JOBS and started a foundation to encourage young people to pursue blue-collar jobs, recently responded to President Joe Biden’s recent decision to pay for American’s student loans.
President Biden announced that any American with college debt and a yearly income below $125,000 (or an annual family income below $250,000) is eligible for $20,000 from the U.S. Treasury.
While this may make the 37% of four-year university graduates happy, Rowe said that it is a “slap in the face” to everyone else whose tax dollars make Biden’s plan possible.
“I work hard on this page, (not as hard as I could, perhaps, but pretty hard), to avoid the politics of the moment, and comment only on topics that impact the foundation I’m proud to run – a foundation that awards work-ethic scholarships to individuals who choose to forego an expensive, four-year education in favor of a skilled trade,” Rowe wrote in a recent Facebook post. “When I do weigh in, I try to acknowledge both sides of the argument, and make my points with as much respect as I can muster. Today, however, I can see only one side. Today, I can find nothing to respect in the President’s decision to transfer billions of dollars in outstanding student loans onto the backs of those people my foundation tries to assist – the same people I’ve spent the last twenty years profiling on Dirty Jobs.”
