The X-Men are slated to team up with the Avengers in the upcoming AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY, and THUNDERBOLTS* director Jake Schreier has been eyed to head more projects for the mutants.

“I’m really excited for what [AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY] is going to be. It’s going to give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had,” Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon/Captain America, told IGN when discussing how the addition of the X-Men will add to the Marvel universe.

“Look, I am a big Cyclops fan. That’s my favorite X-Men. I have a Cyclops action figure on my key chain that I’ve had since high school,” Anthony Mackie later added. “When I was in high school, the X-Men cartoon was really big, and this was before the movies. I’ve always been a huge Cyclops fan, and I’m really, really excited — hopefully, knock on wood — for them to be a part of it and come into it. [I’m excited] to hang out with Xavier and Beast and all those guys. But my favorite is Nightcrawler. If I can hang out with one character? Me and Nightcrawler in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras for two weeks, that’s what I do.”

As the X-Men return to the Marvel universe, the studio has been searching for a filmmaker to helm their story. Now, after the success of THUNDERBOLTS*, director Jake Schreier appears to be their man, per Deadline. While the recent movie proved his filmmaking prowess, Schreier is even more a good fit for the job because of a deep seated love for the franchise.

The X-Men series is in need of a makeover as the last movie in the mainline series, X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX, was a complete disaster, grossing only $65 million at the box office in 2019, when superhero mania was at its peak. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

DARK PHOENIX is serviceable fun, with good action and a few decent performances, but the villain is terrible, and the movie isn’t everything it could’ve been. Like many X-MEN movies, there’s an underlying worldview of paganism the world the filmmakers have built, but this movie also has a strong moral, redemptive message of sacrifice, forgiveness, redemption, and self-control. Sadly, though, there’s some strong foul language and intense violence that warrant a strong caution for DARK PHOENIX.

It remains to be seen if this new stage of the X-Men will result in a complete reset, with a full new cast, or if introducing talent like Schreier will be enough to restore the franchise to its former glory.
