Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins shared the importance of teaching your children about Jesus at an early age.
“I think it began at a young age, you know, being able to, on a daily basis, spend time praying with them, telling them stories of Jesus from the Bible, telling them the difference He’s made in my life,” the quarterback said on the “Sports Spectrum” podcast. “You know, then it grows to where they’re old enough to really understand the gospel and to consciously ask Jesus to come into their life, and then there’s this growth as they get older of understanding what that really means and truly surrendering their life to Him.”
Cousins wanted to “instill a trust and a love for Jesus, such that to surrender and give your life to Him is a natural decision.”
“Because you’d say, well, of course, I want it in His hands, because I understand how much He loves me. I know I can trust Him. I understand He’s all-powerful, and so it’s just a process of kind of guiding them. It has to be their decision. They have to own it,” he added.

Cousins shares sons Cooper, 8, and Turner, 7, with wife Julie, and a major way he ministers to them is through his actions on and off the field.
Before every game, Cousins and his family would pray Ephesians 3:20-21 to remind the quarterback that his purpose is much bigger than football.
The verses read, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.”
“I look back now with a sample size that’s much larger with the number of years we’ve been playing, and you can see the times that that prayer has been answered,” the athlete told Sports Spectrum in 2023.
“It’s the losses where you’re reminded that I don’t know what I’m doing, and I need help, and God’s gonna have to be bigger than my shortcomings and my inadequacies,” he continued. “So, both the wins and the losses become great opportunities to recognize who God is in your life.”
Cousins views his football career and his role as a father through the lens of spiritual stewardship, using both his words and his actions to guide his family and teammates toward a deeper relationship with God.
