Comedian Tim Hawkins needed to learn to be quiet to hear God’s voice better.

“I grew up in a very fun family. We laughed a lot. We enjoyed comedy,” he told the “Jesus Calling” podcast recently of where is comedy originated. “I didn’t know what it was. I just know it made me feel good, and it was fun to create it and make people laugh. It’s always been an icebreaker for me with people. And so, I just gladly found a career doing it.”

Hawkins built a successful career doing clean comedy, although, he said, “My job is to be funny. People call me a Christian comedian, but I’m a Christian who is a comedian.”

However, Hawkins’ family life eventually began to struggle due to the busyness of his career.

“The travel and the nature of what I do, when you’re building any business, a lot of your brain power has to go toward that,” he explained. “And what happens is if you’re not home physically and mentally, I realized my family was getting the scraps. I just did the best that I could with comedy, but it just took so much away from personal life that it was starting to show. And mentally it was draining. I had no endorphins left.”

Hawkins decided to take a break from his career and learn how to rest again.

“I was just drained, and I stepped away, and God in His grace — it happened to be right when COVID came about — and so, for like a year, year and a half, I didn’t pick up a guitar, I didn’t write a joke, I didn’t want anything to do with it,” he recalled.

Through this season, Hawkins learned how to step away and be present.

“Being able to just stop that and be quiet and present. God says, ‘He’s the I Am.’ He’s present. He’s right now. He says, ‘Don’t worry about the past and don’t worry about the future. Or don’t regret the past, don’t worry about the future.’ He’s got that in control,” he encouraged.

It’s a profound reminder that echoes Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:34, where He says, “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

Just because he learned to take a break doesn’t mean Hawkins isn’t doing comedy anymore. In fact, he release a new special called FIST BUMP earlier this year which actually came out of the COVID pandemic.

Hawkins’ story is a good reminder to slow down, take a minute and trust God in the present.
