Therapist, author and speaker Jason Van Ruler has one simple phrase that can “change your marriage.
“A line that’s literally able to change your marriage is, ‘If it matters to you, it matters to me,’” he said during an episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast.” “A lot of people go, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter to me.’ I don’t care if it doesn’t matter to you, it matters to the person who’s your friend, who’s your teammate, who’s your person, so if it matters to them, now it matters to me.”
Bure agreed, sharing an example of a partner having a hard day at work and needing a little time to zone out on their phone after getting home.
“But then you can come back and say…’Can we talk about our day?’” she said, explaining that you can give your partner space, while still creating a moment where you can share your feelings.
“I just think sometimes it’s the order in which we don’t think about for our spouse or our partner at times,” Bure added.

The FULL HOUSE actress often speaks about the ups and downs of marriage, sharing the lessons she’s learned through her own relationship with husband Valeri Bure.
“I think year to year you have to reevaluate what’s working, what’s not,” she said on an episode of the “Stay True” podcast. “How are the schedules changing? And you have to continually adapt to what’s new to figure out your rhythms, and the rhythms are going to keep changing.”
Bure continued, “Having a flexibility, not only in schedule but with each other as husband and wife, because that’s the first thing that’s going to go. Your marriage gets put to the test.”
“You have to prioritize the relationship…[and] really finding time with you and your husband,” she concluded.
Something that has always helped the Bures? Their faith.
“I’ve been married for 29 years and I have an incredible, wonderful marriage, but it isn’t without its valleys of real struggle and then being able to build that back up,” Bure said in a 2025 interview with Us Weekly. “And so, there were times of deep brokenness that I felt but God is in the restoration business. He loves to restore and make all things new and he certainly has.”
Bure might be juggling a busy career and family life, but for the actress, making time for your spouse is always important.
