Seattle Sounders star Georgi Minoungou recently shared the Bible verse that “means a lot” to him.
“My favorite verse is Psalm 23:4,” he told CBN — “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Minoungou said, “It means a lot for me because sometimes you pass into obstacles, and you got [to] remember that the Lord is with you. He won’t leave you like that. He will help you, and He will glorify His name and give you testimony.”

The soccer player also shares his faith on social media. His Instagram bio reads, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. Galatians 2:20.”
In a September post celebrating a big win, Minoungou wrote, “‘The Lord will make you the head, not the tail.’ Deuteronomy 28:13,” adding, “#jesisisking.”
The soccer star has previously spoken about his commitment to staying positive and focusing on his blessings, even in the face of hardship. Minoungou was struck by an infection in 2023 that left him visually impaired in one eye, but he hasn’t let that slow him down.
“The fans were sending me some [messages], like everybody was trying to reach out to make me feel good,” he told the Sounders website. “Everybody was there… The Seattle community. And at that time, I was with the [Sounders] second team, so that was even crazier. So just to think about the love that the community has for me is incredible.”
Minoungou continued, “When [people] see me, [they think], “Georgi, bro, this guy smiles all the time,’ because where I grew up, people were giving me that energy, that vibe. And coming [to Seattle], I try to bring this and be relentless… Just bring the positive vibe and make life happy.”
That positivity was engrained in him in his childhood days growing up in Abidjan, a city in the Ivory Coast.
“In Africa, everybody is more together,” Minoungou explained. “People love to do things together, enjoy [themselves]. And this is how I grew up. It was a good thing, a good community.”
He added, “I grew up with positivity, energy, always happiness, and I feel like that’s the kind of person that I am [now].”
Minoungou’s positive outlook and strong faith have seen him through life’s ups and downs, sustaining and encouraging him in his athletic career.
