"Hollywood Demonology 101"
When the Catholics and Protestants closed their film offices in Hollywood in the 1960s, they opened the floodgates to graphic violence, sex, and obscenity in the movies. They also opened the floodgates to Anti-Christian bigotry and even Satanism in the movies, e.g., ROSEMARY’S BABY. THE LAST EXORCISM PART II is another movie in the “tradition” of ROSEMARY’S BABY’s sex and Satanism, where a young woman is pursued sexually by a demon.
Apparently, the first movie’s exorcism movie wasn’t really the “last exorcism.” Nell, the young victim in the first movie, has survived the demonic mayhem that occurred on her father’s farm. The authorities find her in a catatonic state, but she suddenly comes out of it. They place her in a home for wayward young women. Frank, the home’s director, convinces Nell not to wear her Christian cross. Demons aren’t real, he tells her.
His words seem to be true until the movie shows an invisible demonic force causing Nell to moan sexually in her sleep. Other demonic visitations start to occur. Then, a nurse who treated Nell tells her the demon still wants her. She offers Nell hope that members of a fringe Christian sect, the Order of the Right Hand, can deliver her from the demon. The sect believes that, if the demon can seduce Nell to give into it, it will lead to the Apocalypse.
Ashley Bell turns in another good performance as Nell in THE LAST EXORCISM PART II. The movie is effectively creepy. However, the movie is also fairly sleazy and lewd in parts. And, the demon wins in the end, causing death and destruction in its wake. Thus, Nell becomes totally possessed at the end. Also, the Christian sect Nell consults has a plan to kill her if their exorcism of the demon doesn’t succeed. So, the movie depicts Christianity as completely ineffectual in dealing with the demonic. THE LAST EXORCISM PART II has no redeeming qualities. It gives too much power to Satan’s demons, who have been conquered by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, if only human beings learn how to abide by that Gospel.
(OOO, PaPa, AbAbAb, FRFR, LL, VV, SS, MM) Very strong demonic, occult worldview where demon wins in the end, with strong pagan attitude toward sex, and Christianity is seen as ineffectual against Satan’s power, with a fringe Christian group deciding they should kill the victim of demonic possession if their occult methods of getting rid of the demon don’t work; nine obscenities (including one “f” word), three strong profanities, and four light profanities; strong scary violence includes demon-harassed young man slits his throat but camera cuts away, sounds of people being attacked and killed behind a closed door, exorcists give possessed character a lethal dose of morphine when their exorcism gets out of control, man appears to be thrown from second story window, blood appears on a window of house in a shot from the street, demon appears to cause two characters to have fits, demon-possessed character causes fire in house and cars to explode in flames as the character drives by in a vehicle, sounds of birds slamming into a church, menacing figures, dead father appears and threatens daughter with a shotgun to stop demon from possessing her but he’s knocked over head by another young woman with demonic eyes, fly comes out of demon possessed woman’s eye; strong sexual content includes protagonist gets excited by explicit sounds of a couple having sexual relations in a hotel room, demon causes protagonist to caress her face and upper body while she moans sexually in her sleep (the touching face events occur several times), sleeping young woman makes orgasmic sounds as invisible demonic force lifts her from her bed, a reference to oral sex in dialogue when young women talk about first dates; no nudity; no alcohol use; no smoking or illegal drugs; and, demonic characters with masks stalk heroine, man harasses heroine on the street then starts having a fit, Christian exorcists deceive heroine about their plan to kill her if they can’t stop a powerful demon from possessing her.
