Dennis Quaid Reveals His Foundation: ‘Letting Go and Letting God Work’

Movieguide® award nominee Dennis Quaid shared his journey to faith and relationship with Christ on the “Jesus Calling” podcast.
Quaid’s interest in Christianity began at a young age.
“My brother and I both got baptized at the same time,” he shared on the podcast. “I think I was nine and he was twelve, and I remember his assistant baseball coach came over and talked with him on the couch about getting baptized. And I was watching television in the next room, but I could hear them and I decided I wanted to get baptized, too. So that’s how that occurred.”
Quaid described himself as a “seeker,” and after becoming disillusioned by the church, he tried to find truth and meaning elsewhere.
“I think people do drugs or, you know—people worship all kinds of things,” he continued. “If you’re doing drugs, your god is drugs, because that’s what’s filling that hole inside you, or it’s money or it’s sex or it’s a relationship, all these things that could break down, because we all handle it our way instead of the real deal, which is God, which is, you know, Jesus.”
After Quaid got sober, he read the Bible again—a choice that transformed his life.
“And I still needed something to fill that hole. I read the Bible again, I’ve read it like four or five times from cover to cover—this was back in the ‘90s—and I was really struck by the red words of Jesus, which really brought me around for the first time of having a personal relationship with Jesus that I don’t think I had really understood before, because I was trying to handle things myself,” Quaid shared.
“He’s a personal experience that you have with Him, rather than something that’s just an idea,” he added. “It’s hard to express it in words, that relationship, because words don’t capture it. It’s about letting go and letting God work in your life, that’s all.”
“We’re all sinners, and it’s taken me a lot to get the point that Jesus actually came here, and we were forgiven of our sins even before we committed those sins—that’s all we need,” the actor added.
Quaid concluded his time on the podcast by sharing his thoughts on prayer.
“Prayer is a way of having an experience of having a personal relationship with God that is yours, and there’s peace in that that’s not dependent on what’s going on today. You know, sometimes it’s just sitting there with Him, but it’s a connection,” he reflected.

“I grew up at the Baptist church; I love the hymns that I remember from being a kid,” he said of the album’s inspiration. “The songs are self-reflective and self-examining, not churchy. All of us have a relationship with God, whether you’re a Christian or not.”
While the actor became “disillusioned” with the church for a few years as a teenager, he “came back to Christianity and…finding that it’s really the same all throughout the world.”
“People are people with the same sort of yearnings,” Quaid said. “We’re all spiritual beings whether we know it or not. So that’s what I speak to, one’s relationship with God or non-relationship with God.”
