Here’s Why Hallmark’s THE WAY HOME Feels So Different

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE WAY HOME seems different from Hallmark’s typical fare, and that’s because the series didn’t actually originate with the network.

“If you’re a fan of Hallmark programming, you’ve definitely noticed that the network’s new show THE WAY HOME is a departure from the typical tone of their programming. It simply feels higher caliber, boasting 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has an unusually stellar cast that includes Andie McDowell,” CinemaBlend reported.

“So, what happened? First off, the show didn’t start out at Hallmark,” the outlet continued. “Surprise surprise, it was in development for Netflix. EVP Lisa Hamilton Daly brought it with her when she came to Hallmark.

The video then quoted a statement that Hamilton told Moviefone, where she revealed the show was something she brought when she joined Hallmark.

“‘I’ll tell you a little secret — well it’s not even a secret,” Daly told Moviefone. “I brought that with me. I was at Netflix previously, and I developed it there. I have been in love with that show ever since it was pitched to me at lunch one day, and the team and everybody did an incredible job bringing it to life. It only gets better. Stuff gets mind-blowing by the end, so I’m really excited that people are loving it.’”

A synopsis of THE WAY HOME reads, “Three generations of Landry women reunite and begin to heal from their family’s past when their youngest member finds herself on an unexpected journey. Stars Andie MacDowell, Chyler Leigh, Evan Williams, Sadie Laflamme-Snow.”

The show includes elements of time travel where characters venture through different timelines. Variety reported, “The scope of THE WAY HOME and how it handles the mechanics of time travel is impressive for any sci-fi show. What makes the series so special is how it uses those elements to bolster the characters’ stories. Yes, this is a show where a magical pond takes people back in time, but even more, the show is about grief, reconnecting and facing the past. It is charming and addictive in equal measure, unlike anything else on TV at the moment.”
